Philips Sonicare puts AI in a toothbrush and I kind of love it

Every company seems determined to cram AI into its products these days, whether it belongs there or not. A toothbrush felt like the last place I expected to see it. Yet after reading about the new Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9900 Prestige, I have to admit this thing is pretty cool.

The headline feature is on-device AI that watches how you brush in real time. Instead of spitting out meaningless insights after you’re done, it actively helps while you’re brushing. A light ring provides instant feedback, while a built-in 12-zone mouth map shows exactly which areas you’ve covered and which ones still need attention. That strikes me as a genuinely useful feature rather than AI for the sake of saying a product has AI.

Philips also included SenseIQ technology, which automatically reduces brushing intensity if you’re pressing too hard. You can choose from eight brushing modes and three intensity levels, and the toothbrush adapts to your habits as you use it.

The company says the DiamondClean 9900 Prestige removes up to 2,000 percent more plaque and helps deliver up to 1,500 percent healthier gums than a manual toothbrush. As always, those are Philips’ own testing numbers, but if the guidance system actually helps people brush more thoroughly every day, I can see why the results would improve.

Outside of the AI features, the toothbrush looks like a premium product too. Philips says it uses a quieter sonic motor, comes with a rechargeable travel case and charging glass, and has been redesigned to make battery replacement easier. It will also be offered in Quartz Black, Silver White, and Satin Mauve, all of which look far nicer than the boring white toothbrushes most of us grew up with.

I am usually the first person to question whether AI belongs in everyday gadgets. Most of the time the answer is no. This time, though, Philips seems to have found a practical application that could actually help people build better brushing habits. That is a lot more interesting than asking a toothbrush to write emails or tell jokes.

The Philips Sonicare Next-Generation DiamondClean 9900 Prestige will be available on Amazon in September 2026. Philips has not yet announced pricing.
