Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 packs nine JBL speakers and AI features into a $400 Android tablet

Lenovo is back with a second-generation version of its entertainment-focused tablet, and this time it is doubling down on the features that made the original stand out. The new Tab Plus Gen 2 combines a large high-resolution display, an unusually ambitious speaker setup, AI-powered software features, and a redesigned kickstand, all while keeping the starting price at $399.99.

What immediately grabs attention is the audio system. While most tablets treat sound as an afterthought, Lenovo has equipped the Tab Plus Gen 2 with a JBL-engineered nine-speaker setup tuned with Dolby Atmos. The company says the system is designed to deliver clearer dialogue, deeper bass, and a more immersive experience whether users are watching movies, streaming shows, or listening to music.

The tablet can also function as a standalone Bluetooth speaker. Users can stream audio from a phone directly to the device, turning it into a portable speaker when the display is not being used.

Visuals get an upgrade too. The Tab Plus Gen 2 features a larger 12.1-inch LCD display with a 2560 x 1600 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision support, and HDR10 compatibility. Lenovo says the screen can reach up to 800 nits in High Brightness Mode, which should help with visibility outdoors.

Under the hood is a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 processor paired with up to 12GB of RAM and as much as 256GB of storage. For users who need more space, microSD expansion supports cards up to 2TB.

One of the more practical changes is the redesigned kickstand. Lenovo has moved to a 360-degree rotating design that supports multiple viewing positions in both portrait and landscape orientations. Whether the tablet is sitting on a kitchen counter for recipes, hanging in a campsite setup, or propped up for movie watching, the company wants it to adapt to different environments without requiring an accessory.

Lenovo is also leaning into AI. The Tab Plus Gen 2 includes AI Live Transcript with real-time translation, a feature intended to help users understand content in different languages. Other additions include Lenovo Smarter Reader for navigating written content and AI Notes for organizing information and taking notes.

Battery life looks respectable on paper. Lenovo rates the 10,200mAh battery for up to 15 hours of YouTube streaming and includes support for 45W fast charging.

Software support is another bright spot. The tablet launches with Android 16 and Lenovo promises two operating system upgrades through Android 18, along with security updates through 2030.

The biggest question is whether consumers actually want a tablet built around premium audio. Most manufacturers focus on thinner designs, faster processors, or productivity features. Lenovo is taking a different approach by treating the tablet as an entertainment hub first. For users who regularly watch movies, stream music, or use a tablet as a secondary display around the house, that strategy could make sense.

The Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 is expected to launch soon in select markets with a starting price of $399.99.
