OpenAI and Target are tightening their partnership, and it has the potential to reshape how people shop. Target is rolling out a full app experience inside ChatGPT, giving shoppers a conversational way to browse, plan, and buy. It is a natural extension of what the retailer already does well.
And on a personal note, my family and I love Target. We are in that parking lot several times a week doing Drive Up orders from the car, so this kind of integration hits home for us.
The new Target app in ChatGPT launches next week in beta. Shoppers will be able to ask for ideas, get tailored recommendations, build multi-item baskets, and check out using Drive Up, Order Pickup, or shipping. It brings that friendly Target browsing vibe into a simple chat.
Target is also expanding its use of ChatGPT Enterprise. The company has rolled it out to 18,000 employees at headquarters. Teams use it to work faster, cut through busywork, and make everyday tasks less painful.
AI already plays a big part in Target’s operations. It helps with supply chain forecasting and keeps store processes moving smoothly. It also powers Target’s digital personalization work, which is becoming a bigger part of the shopping experience.
Tools like Agent Assist and Store Companion help staff look up information instantly. They can even handle things like price matching or starting returns. It gives team members more time to actually help guests.
Target’s Shopping Assistant and Gift Finder are built to help people browse in a more natural way. They can suggest gifts based on interests, age, or occasion. The idea is to make finding the right thing less of a chore.
Guest Assist and the JOY vendor system show how Target uses AI to support both shoppers and partners. JOY pulls from more than 3,000 FAQs to answer vendor questions right away.
The new ChatGPT integration builds on everything Target already has in place. A shopper can tag the Target app and ask something like, “Help me plan a family holiday movie night.” ChatGPT then pulls together blankets, snacks, candles, slippers, and whatever fits the moment. You browse, adjust the basket, and check out through your Target account.
Target plans to add more features soon, including Target Circle integration and same-day delivery through ChatGPT. It is all meant to feel as simple as chatting with a friend.
This partnership also reflects a larger trend in retail. Companies are starting to run major parts of their business on AI, not just experiment with it. Target is clearly one of the leaders moving quickly in this new direction.
And for those of us constantly doing Drive Up runs, it is nice to see a retailer making real improvements instead of gimmicks.
