Apple bets another $30 billion on US chip manufacturing

Well, folks, Apple is spending another $30 billion with Broadcom to expand U.S. chip manufacturing.

The company announced a new multiyear agreement expected to exceed $30 billion that will lead to the production of more than 15 billion chips in the U.S. The investment also includes a major expansion of manufacturing operations in Fort Collins, Colorado, where advanced wireless components used in Apple devices will be produced.

The Colorado facility is set to receive a $1.5 billion upgrade that will expand and modernize production. The plant manufactures advanced radio frequency components, including FBAR filters, along with other wireless technologies that help power connectivity across Apple’s product lineup.

This marks the largest commitment yet under Apple’s American Manufacturing Program, an initiative launched last year to strengthen domestic manufacturing and help build a more resilient U.S. chip supply chain. Apple says the latest investment will support hundreds of American jobs while increasing production of critical components closer to home.

If you’re hoping this means the next iPhone will be assembled in the United States, don’t get too excited. That’s not what’s happening here. Instead, Apple is increasing the number of components made domestically while final assembly of its products will continue to take place elsewhere. Even so, producing more of the technology that goes inside Apple devices on American soil is a notable shift.

The new agreement is also part of Apple’s broader pledge to invest $600 billion in the U.S. economy over four years. Whether you’re excited about bringing more manufacturing back to the U.S. or you’re simply curious about where the hardware inside your devices comes from, this is one of Apple’s biggest domestic manufacturing commitments to date.
