Ubuntu’s animal naming tradition just got a lot more prehistoric. Canonical has revealed that Ubuntu 27.04 will carry the codename Tenacious T-Rex, giving the upcoming Linux release a mascot with considerably more bite than your average desktop wallpaper.
The official Ubuntu account shared the news in an announcement on X, writing, “Hear that roar? Ubuntu 27.04 has a name. Make way for Tenacious T-Rex!” A dinosaur emoji rounded out the October 12 post, which kept things short and offered no technical details about the release.
Finally, a cool Ubuntu name! Everyone loves dinosaurs, and Tenacious T-Rex is the kind of codename that makes me curious to see the artwork before I even know what the release will include. Those tiny arms and enormous teeth should give the designers plenty to work with.
The 27.04 version number points to April 2027. Under Canonical’s established release cycle, this would be an interim release with nine months of updates, rather than a long-term support release. Ubuntu publishes a new version every six months, with LTS releases arriving every two years.
That shorter support window is useful context for anyone already thinking about installing it. Interim versions cater to users who prefer newer software and are comfortable upgrading more frequently. People who prioritize a longer maintenance period have the LTS track.
As for what Tenacious T-Rex will actually deliver, the naming announcement does not specify a Linux kernel version, desktop changes, performance improvements, or hardware requirements. Those details will need their own announcements, so there is no reason to treat a dinosaur mascot as evidence of a more powerful operating system.
Canonical has my attention with the name, but the software will determine whether Ubuntu 27.04 deserves a spot on your computer. Better hardware support, a polished desktop, and reliable upgrades would give this dinosaur something worth roaring about.
