System76 Lemur Pro brings 18-hour battery life to Linux users

I’ve always had a soft spot for System76. The company has spent years proving that Linux users don’t have to settle for generic hardware or immediately wipe Windows from a new machine. Now, it is back with what could be its most compelling laptop yet.

The newest refresh of the Lemur Pro is available in both 14-inch and 16-inch versions, and both models weigh less than three pounds. In fact, the smaller model comes in at an astonishing 2.2 pounds, while the larger version tips the scales at just 2.96 pounds. That’s lighter than many premium Windows ultrabooks and surprisingly close to tablet territory.

Battery life is the big story here. System76 claims the new Lemur Pro can deliver up to 18 hours on a charge, making it the longest-lasting laptop the company has ever shipped. If that number holds up outside the marketing department’s testing lab, Linux users may finally have a true all-day machine that doesn’t require hunting for outlets at airports or coffee shops.

Powering the new system are Intel’s next-generation Panther Lake processors, built on the company’s 18A process technology. Buyers can choose between the Intel Core Ultra 5 325 with eight total cores and up to 47 TOPS of AI performance, or the more powerful Intel Core Ultra X7 358H featuring 16 cores and up to 50 TOPS.

Graphics capabilities depend on processor choice. The Core Ultra 5 model uses Intel integrated graphics, while the higher-end Core Ultra X7 configuration gets Intel Arc B390 graphics. According to System76, the flagship chip offers more than double the graphics performance of the previous generation Lemur Pro.

Memory is fixed at 32GB of LPDDR5X running at 7467MT/s, while storage tops out at 4TB using a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD. That should be more than enough for developers, creators, and anyone who routinely keeps dozens of browser tabs open while pretending to work.

Display options include a 14-inch 1920×1200 panel or a larger 16-inch 2560×1600 screen. Both feature a productivity-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio, wide viewing angles, and matte finishes designed to cut down on glare.

What really stands out to me is that System76 did not sacrifice connectivity in the pursuit of thinness. The Lemur Pro includes Thunderbolt 4, USB-C with Power Delivery, two USB-A ports, HDMI output, and even a microSD card reader. That last one feels increasingly rare these days.

Wireless connectivity is equally modern thanks to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support, while charging happens over USB-C using the included 65W charger. A 73Wh battery sits inside the chassis, helping explain those ambitious endurance claims.

As expected, buyers can choose between Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS with the COSMIC desktop environment, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, or Ubuntu 26.04 LTS preinstalled. Unsurprisingly, I would pick Pop!_OS.

Pricing starts at $1,999, although System76 is currently offering a fitting $76 discount through July 7 as part of a Fourth of July promotion. You can order your own here.
