OpenAI wants enterprises to stop thinking about AI as a side tool and start treating it like a digital employee. That is the pitch behind Frontier, a new enterprise platform designed to help companies build, deploy, and manage AI agents that can take on real work across the business.
The idea is solid. The name is not. Frontier sounds vague and interchangeable, especially for a product OpenAI is positioning as a rethink of how enterprise work gets done. For something meant to feel forward-looking, the branding plays it surprisingly safe.
OpenAI says AI is already changing work far beyond engineering teams. According to the company, 75 percent of enterprise workers report AI helped them complete tasks they could not do before. Finance, sales, operations, and support teams are all leaning on AI to break through work that used to stall out.
The company points to deployments across more than one million businesses. In manufacturing, OpenAI claims agents cut production optimization work from six weeks to one day. A global investment firm used agents across its sales process and freed up more than 90 percent of salespeople’s time. An energy producer reportedly increased output by up to 5 percent, adding more than $1 billion in revenue. Even with some marketing gloss, it is clear enterprises are seeing enough upside to feel pressure to move faster.
According to OpenAI, the real problem is no longer model capability. It is deployment. Agents are easy to prototype and hard to run well. They lack shared context, operate in silos, and often add complexity instead of removing it. Frontier is meant to fix that by treating AI agents more like employees than tools.
The platform is built around what OpenAI calls AI coworkers. Agents get shared business context, onboarding, the ability to learn from feedback, and clear permissions and boundaries. Without those basics, OpenAI argues, agents stay stuck as demos instead of becoming dependable.
Early adopters include HP, Intuit, Oracle, State Farm, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Uber, BBVA, Cisco, and T Mobile. OpenAI says Frontier acts as a shared semantic layer, connecting data warehouses, CRM systems, ticketing tools, and internal apps so agents understand how work actually flows.
Once connected, agents can reason over data, work with files, run code, and use tools inside an open execution environment. They build memory over time, improve through evaluation, and can run locally, in the cloud, or on OpenAI hosted infrastructure. Identity, permissions, and guardrails are built in, which matters for regulated industries.
OpenAI is also pairing customers with forward deployed engineers to help agents move from pilots into production, feeding real world lessons back into its research.
Frontier is available now to a limited set of customers, with broader access coming later. The platform itself tackles real enterprise pain points around AI agents. It just deserved a name that felt a little less generic.
