Most security cameras are pretty dumb. They detect movement, send a notification to your phone, and leave you to figure out whether it was a person, a squirrel, or a plastic bag blowing across the driveway.
The new SwitchBot Outdoor Pan Tilt Cam 3K wants to be smarter than that.
Available now in North America and the UK, the outdoor camera uses AI to do more than simply flag motion. According to SwitchBot, it can actually describe what it sees using natural language. Rather than receiving a generic alert, users could get notifications saying a package was delivered, someone arrived home, an animal entered the yard, or a suspicious person approached the property.
That sounds far more useful than the endless stream of “motion detected” alerts that most camera owners eventually learn to ignore.
The company says users can also search recorded footage using plain language queries. For example, you could ask the system to find video of a car being scratched or your dog running around the backyard instead of manually scrubbing through hours of recordings.
Under the hood, the camera packs a 5MP sensor capable of recording 3K video along with a large F1.6 aperture for improved low-light performance. Four infrared LEDs and four white LEDs provide both traditional night vision and full-color nighttime footage.
Coverage should not be an issue either. The camera offers 360-degree horizontal rotation, 90-degree vertical movement, and automatic motion tracking to follow moving subjects as they travel through the frame.
SwitchBot says its AI can recognize people, vehicles, animals, and objects while reducing false alerts caused by insects or random movement. Interestingly, the system can reportedly distinguish between different animal types too, including deer, bears, and coyotes.
The Outdoor Pan Tilt Cam 3K also checks several boxes that enthusiasts tend to care about. It supports wired Ethernet in addition to Wi-Fi, offers local recording to microSD cards up to 512GB, and includes RTSP support for integration with Home Assistant, NVR platforms, and NAS devices.
Frankly, I always appreciate when a company embraces open standards instead of trying to lock customers into a proprietary cloud ecosystem.
The IP66-rated camera is designed to survive rain, dust, and temperatures as low as negative 20 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for year-round outdoor use in many parts of the world.
SwitchBot is selling the Outdoor Pan Tilt Cam 3K now for $79.99 on Amazon. For a limited time, however, a clickable coupon drops the price to a much more compelling $59.99.
