Acer wants Android tablets to matter again with the new Iconia Duo lineup

Android tablets have been in a weird spot for years. Folks either buy a cheap one for Netflix and web browsing or jump straight to an iPad. Acer seems to think there is room in the middle again, especially for people that want a larger screen, stylus support, detachable keyboards, and something more productivity-focused without locking into Apple’s ecosystem.

Personally, I appreciate Acer even bothering here. Quality Android tablets have become increasingly rare over the years, especially if you want something larger and more productivity-focused. Too many Android tablets feel disposable or underpowered these days, so it is refreshing to see Acer offer devices with OLED displays, stylus support, detachable keyboards, and features that actually try to compete with premium tablets instead of racing to the bottom.

At Computex 2026, Acer unveiled three new Android 16 tablets under the Iconia Duo brand: the Acer Iconia Duo S14, Iconia Duo S12, and Iconia Duo D12. All three devices use a taller 3:2 aspect ratio instead of the wider displays commonly found on Android tablets today. Acer says the format is better for both productivity and media use, and frankly, it makes sense. A 3:2 display tends to feel more natural for reading, multitasking, document editing, and web browsing than the ultra-wide panels many Android tablets use.

The flagship model is the Acer Iconia Duo S14, and this thing is pretty wild for an Android tablet. It features a massive 14.2-inch 2880×1840 OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 100 percent DCI-P3 color support. Acer is clearly targeting creative professionals here, especially with optional accessories like an active stylus, detachable keyboard, and magnetic kickstand.

Powering the S14 is a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor paired with Android 16, up to 256GB storage, and 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM. Acer also includes dual USB-C ports, DisplayPort input and output support, Wi-Fi 6E, quad stereo speakers, and a fingerprint reader integrated into the power button. That DisplayPort support is particularly interesting because Acer says the tablet can function as a portable monitor too.

The more compact Acer Iconia Duo S12 keeps much of what makes the S14 interesting but shrinks things down to a 12.2-inch OLED display. Acer says this model is aimed at digital illustrators, engineers, and executives. It still gets a sharp 2800×1840 OLED panel with 600 nits brightness and the same 3:2 aspect ratio.

Instead of the Dimensity 8300, the S12 uses a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 chip. You still get Android 16, stylus support, optional keyboard accessories, microSD expansion, and up to 10 hours of battery life. Acer also highlights the aluminum alloy chassis and nano texture glass coating with anti-glare and anti-fingerprint properties, which sounds more premium than many Android tablets currently on the market.

Then there is the Acer Iconia Duo D12, which is clearly meant to hit a lower price point while preserving the overall concept. Instead of OLED, it uses a 12.2-inch 2400×1600 display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The processor drops down to a MediaTek Helio G99, and storage is capped at 128GB, though you still get 8GB RAM and microSD expansion.

What is interesting is that Acer did not completely gut the cheaper model. The D12 still supports the same 3:2 productivity-focused layout and optional accessories. For folks that mainly want a larger Android tablet for browsing, light productivity, streaming, note-taking, or casual gaming, it could end up being the sweet spot of the lineup.

All three tablets run Android 16 out of the box and support optional stylus pens, detachable keyboards, and magnetic kickstands. Acer is clearly trying to position these devices as laptop alternatives rather than simple consumption tablets.

That said, Android tablets still face the same challenge they always have: software optimization. Google has improved Android for larger displays in recent years, but app support remains inconsistent compared to iPadOS. The hardware here actually looks compelling. The bigger question is whether Android developers are finally ready to take tablets seriously again.

The Acer Iconia Duo S14 launches in North America in September 2026, while both the S12 and D12 arrive in August 2026. Acer has not announced North American pricing yet.
