U.S. Bank just launched its own stablecoin on a public blockchain

U.S. Bank is getting much deeper into cryptocurrency technology. The banking giant has successfully completed a live transaction using USBDC, its own U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin running on the public Stellar blockchain. Yes, really.

This is particularly notable because U.S. Bank isn’t a crypto startup or fintech company trying to break into banking. It is one of the largest banks in the United States, and it is now experimenting with moving its own tokenized dollars across a public blockchain.

The first live USBDC pilot involved a cross-border payment between U.S. Bank entities in North America and Europe. According to the bank, the transaction demonstrated that it could transfer value on-chain while still connecting the process to its existing finance, risk, compliance, and operations infrastructure.

“This live pilot demonstrates our ability to accelerate global cash management and money movement capabilities,” said Gunjan Kedia, chairman and CEO of U.S. Bank. “We are excited to create value for our clients and harness the power of a new technology within the banking system.”

U.S. Bank says USBDC could eventually help bridge some of the limitations of the traditional banking system by allowing transactions to take place around the clock. Stellar transactions can also settle quickly and at very low cost, potentially making the technology attractive for international payments and institutional money movement.

Perhaps more interesting is how much control U.S. Bank retains over its stablecoin. The pilot tested the ability to mint and redeem USBDC, but it also evaluated freezing and clawback capabilities.

That makes USBDC very different from the idea of cryptocurrency as money outside the control of banks. U.S. Bank is effectively taking some of the underlying technology associated with crypto while retaining the controls expected from a regulated financial institution.

Behind the stablecoin is U.S. Bank’s internally developed Digital Asset Platform. The bank says the system provides the foundation for issuing, managing, and transferring tokenized assets while connecting blockchain networks with its existing banking infrastructure.

The project also expands U.S. Bank’s relationship with the Stellar Development Foundation. Stellar is a public blockchain designed in part around payments and financial services, offering near-instant settlement and transaction costs measured in fractions of a cent.

“This pilot is another step forward in our broader digital asset strategy,” said Jamie Walker, Head of Digital Assets and Money Movement at U.S. Bank. “Our focus remains on delivering solutions that solve real client challenges while maintaining the safety, security and reliability that clients expect from U.S. Bank.”

U.S. Bank isn’t saying that customers will suddenly find USBDC sitting alongside dollars in their checking accounts. For now, this is a pilot focused on institutional use.

Still, the bank is already looking beyond this first transaction. Potential uses include liquidity management, moving collateral, cross-border treasury operations, and other institutional transactions where faster settlement could be useful.

Stablecoins have often been associated with crypto exchanges and companies built specifically around digital assets. Seeing a major traditional American bank create its own dollar-backed stablecoin and successfully move it across a public blockchain makes USBDC considerably harder to dismiss as just another cryptocurrency experiment.

The bigger question now is whether USBDC stays largely behind the scenes as institutional banking infrastructure or eventually becomes something U.S. Bank’s business customers can actually use. Either way, one of America’s biggest banks is now moving its own tokenized dollars on-chain, and that is worth paying attention to.
