Every tech company seems to be racing to add AI to its products these days, and now that trend has reached the NAS market.
TerraMaster has launched the F4-425 Pro, a new four-bay NAS that pairs fairly capable hardware with what the company calls the world’s first AI-native NAS operating system, TOS 7. While the hardware looks solid, it’s the software that makes this device stand out.
Rather than digging through menus and settings, TerraMaster wants users to manage the NAS using natural language. Need a shared folder for your team? Want to configure backups? According to the company, you can simply describe what you want and the system will handle the rest.
The F4-425 Pro is powered by Intel’s eight-core N350 processor, includes 16GB of DDR5 memory, and features dual 5GbE networking ports. TerraMaster says link aggregation can deliver transfer speeds up to 1,010MB/s. The company also says the system is capable of handling 4K and 8K workflows, virtual machines, Docker containers, and multi-user access without breaking a sweat.
The bigger story, however, is TOS 7.
TerraMaster says the operating system includes more than 500 APIs that can be accessed by AI agents and developers. The company is also promoting the AI assistant OpenClaw, which can supposedly perform administrative tasks through conversation. One example provided by TerraMaster is creating a shared folder, assigning permissions, and configuring automatic snapshots using a single prompt.
There is no shortage of AI hype in the tech industry right now, so it’s fair to be cautious. On one hand, conversational management could make NAS devices less intimidating for newcomers. On the other hand, many experienced users may prefer the reliability and predictability of traditional controls over trusting an AI assistant with storage management tasks.
Still, I have to admit the concept is interesting. If OpenClaw can consistently understand requests and execute them correctly, it could make managing a NAS much easier for a lot of people. That’s a big “if,” though.
The F4-425 Pro is available now here for $799.99.
