When most people think of NETGEAR, they probably picture Wi-Fi routers, network switches, and other hardware designed to move data from one place to another. The company’s latest product, however, is something a bit different.
Announced ahead of InfoComm 2026, the new NETGEAR Align Controller is being marketed as an AV platform for professional audio and video deployments. But when you look beyond the marketing language, what NETGEAR has really built is a compact Linux server designed for AV networks.
Under the hood is an Intel Amston Lake octa-core x7809 processor paired with 16GB of LPDDR5 memory. The device includes 64GB of internal storage and even offers an M.2 expansion bay for additional capacity. More interestingly, it runs Ubuntu and supports Docker containers, opening the door for applications beyond NETGEAR’s own software.
For AV integrators, the Align Controller combines a number of services that would normally require separate hardware. It can handle precision timing functions, DNS, DHCP, Syslog, NTP, and remote network management through NETGEAR’s Engage platform. Rather than piecing together multiple appliances and hoping everything works together, the idea is to centralize those services into a single box.
The hardware itself is fairly impressive. The front panel includes a color touchscreen display that provides status information and management functions. Connectivity consists of four 2.5GbE ports and two 10G SFP+ ports. The appliance can even be powered using PoE++, eliminating the need for a dedicated power circuit in some deployments. A backup AC power adapter is included as well.
What caught my attention, however, is NETGEAR’s longer-term vision. The company says the Align Controller is intended to become a platform capable of running third-party applications alongside its own tools. That suggests NETGEAR sees an opportunity to move beyond simply selling networking gear and into providing an application layer for AV infrastructure.
In other words, NETGEAR no longer wants to be just the company that sells the switches. It wants to own the platform that sits on top of them.
Whether AV professionals embrace that vision remains unclear, but the underlying hardware certainly looks capable. With Ubuntu, Docker support, remote management capabilities, and enough horsepower to run multiple services, the Align Controller feels more like a purpose-built edge server than a traditional AV appliance.
The NETGEAR Align Controller (GB406) is scheduled to begin shipping in August 2026 and will be demonstrated during InfoComm 2026 in Orlando.
