The average American now spends 52 hours and 12 minutes online every week, according to new research from NordVPN. That’s nearly seven and a half hours every day connected to the internet, whether for work, entertainment, social media, shopping, or increasingly, conversations with artificial intelligence.
The cybersecurity company says Americans are on track to spend 24 years, 9 months, and 15 days of their lives online. While that eye-catching figure is based on survey responses and projections rather than direct measurement, it highlights just how deeply internet usage has become woven into everyday life.
According to the study, Americans typically start browsing the internet around 7:00 a.m. and remain connected until roughly 10:00 p.m. During that time, entertainment dominates online activity. Respondents reported spending 6 hours and 32 minutes per week streaming television shows and movies, 5 hours and 36 minutes watching online videos, 5 hours and 8 minutes listening to music, and just over 5 hours scrolling social media.
What stands out most to me, however, is the emergence of AI as a regular online activity.
The survey found that Americans now spend an average of 45 minutes per week chatting with AI tools. That may not sound like much compared to streaming video or social media, but considering how recently AI chatbots entered the mainstream, the figure is notable. AI has quickly evolved from a novelty into something many people now use without a second thought.
Whether it’s asking ChatGPT a question, generating an image, summarizing a document, or interacting with AI-powered search features, artificial intelligence is steadily becoming another layer of the internet experience. In fact, the survey found that 12 percent of respondents already consider AI an essential part of their routine, while 17 percent believe it has improved their online lives.
The research also highlights an ongoing privacy paradox. Despite growing awareness of online threats, many Americans continue sharing personal information with online services. The survey found that 70 percent have shared their full name online, 66 percent have shared their date of birth, and 56 percent have provided their home address.
At the same time, 27 percent of respondents said they could not imagine going an entire day without internet access. Meanwhile, 35 percent admitted to checking social media while simultaneously watching television or movies, a reminder that many people are no longer consuming media one screen at a time.
As someone whose career depends on the internet, I understand why online usage continues to rise. Still, spending more than 52 hours online every week is a striking figure. The internet was once a destination people visited. Today, it has become the backdrop for much of modern life.
While the headline-grabbing “25 years online” projection will likely attract the most attention, the more interesting takeaway is how quickly AI has joined streaming, social media, and video consumption as a normal part of daily digital behavior. Just a few years ago, AI chatbots barely existed in the public consciousness. Today, millions of Americans are already making them part of their weekly routines.
The study was commissioned by NordVPN and conducted by Cint between April 1 and April 17, 2026. More than 20,000 internet users across 20 countries participated, including 1,000 respondents in the United States.
