SparkyLinux fans have reason to celebrate today as version 8.1 of the “Seven Sisters” release arrived on the project’s download page. This quarterly update builds on Debian 13 “Trixie,” keeping the distribution fully compatible while introducing a refreshed kernel lineup and updated desktop environments. It is not a flashy release, but that is the point. Sparky 8.1 is about reliability and staying current without unnecessary drama.
This update delivers kernel 6.12.48-LTS for most PCs along with refreshed packages such as LibreOffice 25.2.3, KDE Plasma 6.3.6, LXQt 2.1.0, and Xfce 4.20. Firefox ESR 140.4.0 and Thunderbird ESR 140.4.0 are bundled too, with newer versions waiting in the Sparky repositories.
The ARM64 edition remains available, but support for i686 and ARMHF has been discontinued, showing that Sparky’s focus is on modern 64-bit hardware. Users running Sparky 8 do not need to reinstall, as regular updates will bring them to this latest release.
SparkyLinux 8.1 offered a Debian-based desktop with newer packages and several desktop choices. Readers considering it now should continue with the later SparkyLinux 8.3 update.
