Google shuts down false Gmail security scare (fake news)

Google is pushing back against rumors that Gmail users were hit with a massive security warning. The search giant says those claims are flat-out wrong. In other words, it was fake news.

In a statement, Google stressed that Gmail’s protections remain strong and effective, and that no broad warning was ever issued. “Several inaccurate claims surfaced recently that incorrectly stated that we issued a broad warning to all Gmail users about a major Gmail security issue. This is entirely false,” the company said.

That doesn’t mean attackers aren’t trying. Google admits phishers are always looking for ways to sneak into inboxes, but says Gmail continues to block more than 99.9 percent of phishing and malware attempts before they ever reach users. That level of defense makes Gmail one of the safest email platforms available today.

Security, Google argues, is a core priority. It points to heavy investments, constant innovation, and transparent communication as part of its ongoing efforts to keep users safe. The company also urged the media and others covering cybersecurity to stick to facts, since false claims can fuel confusion and create unnecessary panic.

Google also took the opportunity to encourage best practices. It recommends Gmail users adopt password alternatives like Passkeys for stronger account security. The company also advises people to remain vigilant, learn how to spot phishing attempts, and report anything suspicious.

For those worried by the false alarm, the bottom line is simple: Gmail remains secure, and Google has no plans to issue a broad warning because one isn’t needed.
