Proton has spent years positioning itself as the privacy-focused alternative to Big Tech, and now it wants to make leaving Google a lot less painful.
Today, the Switzerland-based company announced Easy Switch for Business, a new migration tool designed to help organizations move from Google Workspace to Proton Mail, Calendar, and Contacts without downtime. According to Proton, businesses can continue using Google’s services while data is transferred in the background, allowing employees to keep working normally throughout the migration process.
If you’ve ever been involved in moving a company’s email system, you know why this matters. Even organizations that have concerns about Google often stay put because migrating email is risky. Nobody wants to explain to the boss why messages disappeared, calendars broke, or customers suddenly can’t reach the company.
Proton says Easy Switch for Business addresses those concerns by walking administrators through the migration process step by step. Businesses can move emails, calendars, contacts, domains, and user accounts while running Google Workspace and Proton side by side. That means IT teams can test everything before making a permanent switch.
The launch comes as Proton continues to lean heavily into privacy and data sovereignty messaging. The company argues that more organizations are questioning their reliance on large US technology providers, particularly as concerns grow around compliance requirements, AI access to user data, and geopolitical uncertainty.
Not surprisingly, Proton takes several shots at Google in its announcement. The company highlights its Swiss headquarters, end-to-end encryption, open-source code, and nonprofit ownership structure as reasons businesses may want to consider making the move.
Proton says it now serves more than 100,000 organizations worldwide, including law firms, newsrooms, NGOs, consultancies, technology companies, and government agencies. According to the company, many customers are looking to reduce dependence on US-based cloud providers while strengthening privacy protections and business continuity planning.
Of course, moving away from Google is easier said than done. Google Workspace is much more than Gmail and Calendar. Many organizations depend heavily on Google Drive, Docs, Meet, and a long list of third-party integrations. Notably, Proton admits that Google Drive migration is not yet supported, although the company says that capability is planned for a future release.
For privacy-focused organizations that have been considering a move away from Google, however, Easy Switch for Business could remove one of the biggest barriers. Whether enough businesses are willing to leave Google’s ecosystem behind remains to be seen.
