For all the talk about artificial intelligence replacing jobs, OpenAI just announced plans that could create a whole lot of new ones.
The company has launched the OpenAI Partner Network, a new program designed to help businesses deploy AI across their organizations. On the surface, it sounds like a fairly standard partner initiative. Dig a little deeper, however, and something much bigger becomes apparent.
OpenAI says it plans to train and enable 300,000 certified consultants by the end of 2026. That number jumped out at me immediately.
For years, the AI industry has focused almost entirely on building better models. Every new release promised stronger reasoning, improved coding abilities, and more advanced capabilities. The assumption seemed to be that once the technology became powerful enough, businesses would naturally figure out how to use it.
OpenAI now appears to believe the challenge is something else entirely. You see, according to the company, the limiting factor for seeing value from AI in the enterprise is no longer model capability. Instead, organizations are struggling with identifying useful applications, integrating AI into existing systems, redesigning workflows, training employees, and managing organizational change.
That actually makes a lot of sense. Buying access to an AI model is relatively easy. Changing how thousands of employees work every day is not.
Many businesses rushed to embrace AI over the past couple of years. Executives wanted AI strategies. Boards wanted AI strategies. Investors wanted AI strategies. In many cases, companies adopted AI tools before fully understanding where those tools would fit into existing processes.
The result is that many organizations are still trying to answer a fundamental question: how do we actually use this stuff? That is where OpenAI sees an opportunity.
The company’s new partner ecosystem includes consulting firms, systems integrators, technology providers, and deployment specialists that can help customers move from experimentation to implementation. Launch partners include some of the biggest names in consulting, including Bain, BCG, McKinsey, and PwC.
OpenAI is also investing $150 million into supporting the ecosystem.
Viewed another way, OpenAI is following a strategy that has worked exceptionally well for enterprise technology companies for decades. Microsoft, Salesforce, Oracle, and other major vendors all built extensive partner networks that helped customers deploy, customize, and support their products. Those ecosystems became powerful growth engines.
OpenAI clearly wants something similar. What I find particularly interesting is what this says about the current state of AI.
If OpenAI is planning to help create 300,000 consultants, it suggests the company believes the technology itself is no longer the biggest obstacle to adoption. The focus is shifting toward implementation, integration, governance, training, and change management.
In other words, the AI industry may be entering a phase where the consultants make as much money as the companies building the models.
Whether that ultimately leads to better outcomes for customers remains to be seen. Some businesses will undoubtedly benefit from expert guidance. Others may end up spending large sums on AI transformation projects that produce little measurable value.
Either way, OpenAI’s announcement reveals an important shift. The conversation is no longer just about building smarter AI. Now it is about building an army of people capable of helping businesses use it.
