TerraMaster has officially rolled out the D1 SSD Pro, a new portable SSD enclosure that is clearly aimed at people who move big files all day and do not want to wait around. This thing uses an 80Gbps Thunderbolt 5 interface, which immediately puts it in a different class than most external storage on the market right now. It is designed for 8K and 4K video editors, developers, and power users running MacBook Pro or Mac mini systems who want external storage that actually keeps up.
The numbers are what jump out first. TerraMaster says the D1 SSD Pro can hit read speeds of up to 7061MB/s and write speeds of up to 6816MB/s when paired with a fast NVMe drive. That is nearly double what most Thunderbolt 4 enclosures manage, and it shows in everyday use. Copying a 6GB file in about a second changes how you think about external storage. It stops feeling like a slow side pocket and starts feeling like part of the system.

Under the hood, the enclosure uses a dual-chip controller design, which helps keep speeds steady during long transfers. This matters when you are dumping terabytes of footage, cloning drives, or backing up giant project folders. A lot of enclosures look good in short benchmarks and then fall apart once the transfer runs for more than a minute. TerraMaster is clearly trying to avoid that here.
The physical design is just as important as the speed. The D1 SSD Pro is built from aerospace-grade aluminum and relies on passive cooling instead of a fan. That means it runs completely silent, which is something you really notice if you work in a quiet room or record audio near your desk. The aluminum body also acts as a big heat sink, pulling heat away from the SSD without adding noise or moving parts.

It is also smaller than you might expect. TerraMaster says the enclosure is about 80 percent the size of other 80Gbps Thunderbolt 5 models, which makes it easy to throw into a bag without thinking about it. The finish is matte and understated, and it feels more like a solid block of metal than a cheap accessory.
The enclosure supports standard M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs with capacities up to 8TB, which is already plenty for most people. TerraMaster says larger drives will be supported in the future. Setup is plug-and-play, with no tools or weird steps required, which is exactly how this kind of hardware should work.
Compatibility is wide, too. The D1 SSD Pro works with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, USB4, and USB 3.2, and it supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. Mac users can even set it up as a boot drive, which is useful for testing different macOS versions or running dual-system setups. Windows users get TerraMaster’s TPC Backupper software for scheduled, incremental, and differential backups, while Mac users can stick with Time Machine. There is also a mobile app that allows one-click photo and video backups from iOS and Android, which is a nice touch if your phone is part of your workflow.

TerraMaster also added hardware-level protection, including short-circuit protection, surge protection, and ESD protection. It is the kind of thing you hope you never need, but you will be glad it is there if something goes wrong.
The TerraMaster D1 SSD Pro is available now for $249.99 before discounts, and TerraMaster is offering a 15 percent launch discount for the first two weeks. For people who want Thunderbolt 5 speed without fan noise or bulky designs, this enclosure is clearly aiming to be the go-to option.
