Miami-Dade tests nation’s first autonomous police patrol vehicle

Miami-Dade County in Florida has introduced the nation’s first autonomous patrol vehicle, called the Police Unmanned Ground vehicle, or PUG Patrol Partner. The 12-month pilot program was developed by Policing Lab in partnership with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, with the goal of testing how AI and robotics can extend deputy resources without additional taxpayer costs.

The PUG is powered by Perrone Robotics autonomy and combines AI-driven analytics, real-time crime data, and a range of sensors. It features 360-degree cameras, thermal imaging, license plate recognition, and drone launch capabilities. Officials describe it as a force multiplier that can improve efficiency and enhance community safety.

“This program offers law enforcement officers a smart high-tech partner in the field,” said Marjolijn Bruggeling, Executive Director of Policing Lab. “The PUG increases situational awareness, automates repetitive tasks, and frees deputies to focus on the complex and human side of policing. It’s a practical step toward safer, more efficient public safety.”

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz echoed that view, saying, “Miami-Dade continues to lead in public safety innovation. The PUG allows us to explore how new technology can keep people safe while making the best use of our resources. Deputies remain at the heart of this mission, and the PUG is here to support them.”

For the trial period, the PUG will be assigned to the Community Affairs Bureau. It will appear at public events where residents can provide feedback directly through a tablet powered by Truleo’s TruAssist application. At the end of the pilot, results will be measured across factors such as response times, deterrence, officer safety, and public trust. If successful, Miami-Dade’s experiment could serve as a model for other police departments across the United States.
