ChatGPT adds Instant Checkout so you can shop without leaving chat

ChatGPT is stepping into e-commerce. The popular AI tool, already used weekly by more than 700 million people, can now help U.S. users not only find products but also buy them directly inside the chat window. The feature is called Instant Checkout, and it is powered by a new open standard known as the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which OpenAI co-developed with Stripe.

At launch, Instant Checkout supports single-item purchases from U.S. Etsy sellers, with Shopify merchants like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori set to follow soon. Over time, the system will expand to include multi-item carts and more merchants across different regions. For shoppers, the idea is simple: instead of clicking away to different storefronts, you stay in the chat, tap “Buy,” and confirm the order details. Payments and fulfillment remain in the merchant’s hands, while ChatGPT acts like a digital middleman passing information securely.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol itself is being open-sourced today. Merchants and developers can start experimenting with integrations right away, whether they process payments through Stripe or another provider. Those already tied to Stripe can even turn on support with minimal changes. The goal is to make adoption as painless as possible while ensuring sellers keep full control of customer relationships, including support, returns, and communication.

Trust is being emphasized at this early stage. Users confirm every step of a transaction, payment data is encrypted and limited to the amount and merchant involved, and only essential details are shared. Merchants do pay a small fee on completed purchases, but users are not charged extra and product rankings in ChatGPT are not influenced by whether Instant Checkout is enabled. For now, product results remain organic, sorted by relevance, price, quality, and availability.

The bigger picture here is what OpenAI calls agentic commerce. Instead of AI simply pointing people toward what to buy, it takes the next step of helping them buy it. Whether this feels like a helpful convenience or another push toward embedding commerce into every digital corner depends on your perspective. What is clear is that ChatGPT is now not just a conversational assistant but also a shopping platform.
