OpenAI is rolling out parental controls for ChatGPT, giving families new tools to manage how the AI is used at home. Parents can now link their account with their teen’s, set restrictions, and receive alerts when something might be wrong. Alongside this launch, a new parent resource page provides guidance on safe and productive use of the technology.
The controls allow parents to customize their teen’s experience. Once accounts are linked, the teen account automatically gets additional safeguards. These include stricter filtering of graphic content, viral challenges, sexual or violent roleplay, and extreme beauty ideals. Parents can decide whether to keep these settings active, but teens cannot disable them on their own.

From the control page, parents can fine-tune features such as turning off voice mode, blocking image generation, disabling memory, or even opting out of model training. They can also set quiet hours when ChatGPT cannot be used. The flexibility here is meant to let families decide what works best for their household.
Notifications are a bigger change. If ChatGPT detects a teen showing possible signs of self-harm, a trained human team reviews the situation. When the system flags acute distress, parents may be contacted by text, email, or phone alerts. OpenAI admits this won’t always be perfect and may sometimes generate false alarms, but argues that it is safer to act than remain silent. The company says it is also working with experts on when to escalate issues to law enforcement or emergency responders.
OpenAI worked with advocacy groups like Common Sense Media and policymakers in states including California and Delaware to shape the feature set. Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media, called the parental controls “a good starting point,” while emphasizing that these tools should complement conversations and rules at home rather than replace them.
Looking ahead, OpenAI is developing an age prediction system to automatically apply teen-appropriate settings. Until that arrives, parental controls will be the most reliable way for families to manage younger users.
The new controls are available now for all ChatGPT accounts. Pricing isn’t a factor here since the features are built directly into the service, but the broader question remains whether these safeguards can meaningfully balance teen safety with privacy and independence.
