I love Words With Friends. I have played it with friends and family almost daily for countless years, and it remains one of those games I keep coming back to. Having familiar people on the other side of the board gives me a reason to keep playing beyond simply chasing a higher score.
So, Zynga’s latest update has my attention. The company is adding more than 25,000 playable words, refreshing definitions, and introducing a way for players to report dictionary entries they think deserve another look.
Among the additions are BUZZWORTHY, BFF, DRIP, and BOOKCLUB. Yes, an abbreviation you might use in a text message can now earn you points, assuming you have the letters and somewhere useful to put them. Your vocabulary may need to catch up with your group chat.
The expanded dictionary works across all game modes, including matches against other players and single-player puzzles. The additions extend beyond slang and pop culture, with thousands of other entries that Zynga says will create opportunities for high-value plays.
For regular players, a dictionary update changes the possibilities on the board. A combination of letters that previously went nowhere could become a useful move, and opponents may start playing unfamiliar words that send you looking for a definition. Learning what the game accepts is part of the competition, even when you think you already have a decent vocabulary.
Clear definitions are valuable here, too. Accepting a word is one thing, but explaining what it means gives players something to take away from the match beyond a score. Zynga says it has modernized those explanations alongside the expanded word list.
The new reporting tool could be the most useful part of the update over time. Players can flag definitions and challenge entries, giving Zynga feedback about the dictionary directly inside the game. That does not mean every objection will result in a change, but it creates a route for questioning something that looks wrong.
There is a balance to strike when updating a word game. Language evolves, and a dictionary can reasonably reflect that, but players also need rules they can understand. An unfamiliar entry is easier to accept when its definition makes sense and everyone plays under the same conditions.
Zynga says the updated dictionary is available now, and Words With Friends remains free to download through the App Store and Google Play. As a longtime player, I welcome more possibilities on the board, although I might feel differently when someone uses BFF to beat me.
