Palo Alto Networks is adding more autonomous AI to its cybersecurity business with the acquisition of Console, an AI-native platform designed to let organizations create agents that analyze information and take action across enterprise systems. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Console’s technology is expected to strengthen the agentic capabilities inside Palo Alto Networks’ Cortex security platform. The idea is to help security teams investigate suspicious activity, determine which alerts deserve attention, and respond to problems without requiring someone to constantly jump between dashboards, tools, and ticketing systems.
Users can instead describe an operational goal using natural language and have an AI agent handle at least some of the work needed to accomplish it. That makes this more interesting than simply bolting another chatbot onto a cybersecurity product, as Palo Alto Networks appears to be moving toward security software that can actually act rather than just provide information to a human operator.
“Security operations can no longer be about managing dashboards and queuing tickets just to help humans work faster,” said Nikesh Arora, chairman and CEO of Palo Alto Networks. “By bringing Console into Palo Alto Networks, our customers can have a direct conversation with data and build agentic workflows in natural language that helps alert and remediate issues automatically.”
Arora calls the concept “software-as-an-agent,” essentially giving the company’s platform the ability to perform tasks rather than waiting for a person at every stage. If it works as intended, security teams could spend less time manually sorting through alerts and more time dealing with the problems that actually require human judgment.
Console was built around a similar philosophy. Instead of expecting users to understand every technical step required to complete an operational task, its software allows someone to specify an objective and have an agent work through the underlying process.
That approach has an obvious appeal in cybersecurity, where large organizations can generate enormous numbers of alerts across their infrastructure. An AI agent capable of examining signals from multiple systems, gathering additional context, prioritizing threats, and performing approved remediation could reduce some of the repetitive work currently handled by security teams.
There is also a potentially uncomfortable side to giving AI this much control. An assistant incorrectly summarizing a security alert is one thing, but an autonomous agent incorrectly changing a configuration or responding to the wrong perceived threat could create an entirely new problem.
Enterprises adopting these systems will therefore need to decide exactly how much authority AI agents should receive. Human approval requirements, audit trails, permissions, and the ability to understand why an agent performed a particular action could become just as important as how quickly the agent responds.

Palo Alto Networks is betting that autonomous software will become increasingly important as attackers gain access to their own AI and automation tools. Humans simply cannot manually examine every piece of security data at machine speed, making some degree of AI assistance increasingly attractive for organizations dealing with large and complicated environments.
Assistance and autonomy are not the same thing, however. Giving an AI system permission to operate enterprise security tools means trusting it not only to understand what is happening, but also to make the correct decision about what should happen next.
The Console acquisition shows that Palo Alto Networks believes security software is heading in that direction. The bigger question is how much control enterprises will actually be comfortable handing over to AI agents when those agents are responsible for protecting some of their most sensitive systems.
