TCL has launched the TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER in the United States, giving students, professionals, and heavy readers another large-screen Android tablet to consider. Rather than competing on processor speed alone, the company is betting that its paper-like display, bundled stylus, and productivity software will help the device stand out.
The centerpiece is a 12.2-inch NXTPAPER display with a 2400 x 1600 resolution, 3:2 aspect ratio, and adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz. TCL rates the screen at 400 nits during standard use and up to 500 nits in sunlight display mode.
TCL says the display reduces glare, reflections, blue light, and flicker while adjusting brightness and color temperature based on the surrounding environment. That could make it more comfortable for long reading, writing, and note-taking sessions than a conventional glossy tablet screen.
A dedicated NXTPAPER Key lets users switch between Ink Paper Mode, Color Paper Mode, and Regular Mode without digging through menus. TCL’s upgraded VersaView system also supports app-level display controls, meaning a reading app can remain in a paper-like mode while video or photo apps retain a more conventional appearance.
The tablet runs Android 16 with TCL’s own interface layered on top. Productivity features include split-screen support, floating windows, Sidebar, Quick Split-screen, PC Mode, Mirror Mode, and Extend Mode. The 3:2 display should also provide more vertical workspace than the wider screens found on many entertainment-focused tablets.
TCL includes its T-Pen 2 stylus in the box. It supports 4,096 pressure levels and comes with interchangeable soft and hard tips. TCL Note is designed to provide a pen-on-paper feel while adding AI-powered tools for organizing handwritten material.
Artificial intelligence features are spread throughout the software. The tablet includes Google Gemini, Circle to Search, Writing Assist, Text Assist, Smart Translator, Smart Voice Memo, real-time subtitles, and an instant-access copying tool. Some buyers may find those additions useful for school or work, although the actual value will depend on how well TCL integrates them into everyday tasks.
Inside, the tablet uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor. It comes with 6GB of physical RAM, 256GB of storage, and support for up to 10GB of RAM expansion. That expansion uses storage as virtual memory, so it should not be confused with having 16GB of actual RAM.
A microSD card can add up to 2TB of storage, which should be useful for people who keep large media collections, offline documents, or school files on the device.
Power comes from a 10,000mAh battery with 33W charging over USB-C. TCL claims up to 65 days in airplane mode, but that figure is a standby measurement and does not represent normal use. Real battery life while reading, streaming, working, or multitasking will be considerably shorter.
The tablet includes dual-band Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, and a USB-C port that also handles wired audio. There is no traditional 3.5mm headphone jack.
For audio, TCL includes four speakers and two microphones. The company also promotes a Sound Booster mode capable of raising volume to 200 percent. Whether that sounds better or simply louder will be worth testing.
The front and rear cameras are both 8MP. The front camera uses fixed focus and is centered for video calls, while the rear camera can handle basic photography, HD video, and document scanning.
The TCL TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER measures 275.6 x 189.34 x 6.7mm and weighs 556 grams, or about 1.23 pounds. It comes in Aerolite Grey and uses a metal unibody design with IP54-rated protection against dust and splashes.
TCL also lists Ultra-Durable Surface Glass and an anti-fingerprint coating. The included flip case supports standing, compact, and writing positions, which adds some value at a time when many tablet makers charge separately for even basic accessories.
The box includes the tablet, T-Pen 2, flip case, USB-C cable, documentation, and a SIM removal pin. TCL does not list a wall charger among the included accessories, so buyers may need to supply their own compatible USB-C power adapter.
At $399.99, the TCL TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER sits in a competitive part of the Android tablet market. Its Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor is not aimed at demanding gaming or workstation-class performance, but the paper-like screen, included stylus, large battery, expandable storage, and bundled case give it a more distinctive identity than many similarly priced tablets.
