Dynabook Portégé Z40L-P puts Intel Arc Pro graphics in a thin Copilot+ PC

Dynabook has unveiled the Portégé Z40L-P, a 14-inch business laptop that attempts to blur the line between a premium ultraportable and a mobile workstation. The Copilot+ PC starts at $2,170 and offers Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, optional Intel Arc Pro graphics, and several features aimed at corporate IT departments.

The most interesting configurations pair an Intel Core Ultra X9 or X7 processor with Intel Arc Pro B390 graphics. Dynabook says the GPU offers as many as 12 Xe graphics cores and can handle technical drafting, engineering design, computer-aided design, content creation, software development, and other graphics-heavy tasks.

Calling any thin laptop a workstation tends to invite skepticism, especially when its graphics are integrated rather than supplied by a traditional discrete GPU. Still, Intel Arc Pro support could make the Z40L-P a useful option for professionals who need more graphics performance than a typical business notebook can provide but do not want to carry a thick and heavy workstation.

“As organizations look to equip their teams for the next generation of intelligent work, they need mobile computing solutions that deliver more than everyday productivity,” said Masa Okumura, director of product marketing at Dynabook Americas. “The Portégé Z40L-P reflects Dynabook’s commitment to developing powerful, highly mobile business laptops that bring advanced AI capabilities, professional graphics performance and mobile workstation-class functionality to users who need to create, analyze, design and collaborate from anywhere.”

Dynabook will also sell configurations with Intel Core Ultra 7 and Core Ultra 5 processors for workers who do not need the higher-end graphics options. The laptop supports up to 64GB of LPDDR5x memory and as much as 2TB of PCIe NVMe storage.

As expected from a new premium Windows business laptop, the Portégé Z40L-P qualifies as a Microsoft Copilot Plus PC. That provides access to features such as Live Captions and Windows Studio Effects, although whether those tools justify buying a Copilot Plus system will depend heavily on how each organization actually uses AI.

Dynabook has also added its own Gesture Control feature. It lets users navigate presentations, control media playback, and perform certain actions using hand movements without touching the computer. This could prove useful during presentations or in classrooms, though it also sounds like the sort of feature many owners may try once and then forget exists.

More practical is the user-accessible 56Wh lithium-polymer battery. Replaceable batteries have become uncommon in thin laptops, so giving businesses a way to swap an aging battery could help extend the machine’s usable life. Dynabook also claims that AI-assisted power management adjusts consumption according to the current workload.

Security is another major focus. The Portégé Z40L-P is a Microsoft Secured-core PC with Microsoft Pluton, dTPM 2.0, a fingerprint reader, Windows Hello facial recognition, and a physical security lock slot.

Human Presence Detection can automatically lock the laptop when its user walks away and wake it when that person returns. Adaptive Dimming can reduce power use when the screen is not being viewed, while Peek Alert is designed to warn users when someone may be looking over their shoulder. Some employees may appreciate these protections, though organizations should clearly explain how presence-sensing features operate before enabling them across a workforce.

The laptop uses a Dark Tech Blue Metallic magnesium alloy chassis and is designed to pass MIL-STD-810H testing methods. Its 14-inch WUXGA display has a productivity-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio, with touch support available as an option.

Port selection is better than what buyers receive on many modern thin laptops. The Z40L-P includes two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, HDMI 2.1, RJ-45 Ethernet, a microSD card slot, and a headset jack. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth.

For video calls, Dynabook includes a 5-megapixel webcam with an infrared sensor and a physical privacy shutter. A dual-microphone array and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support complete the conferencing setup.

Dynabook says the Portégé Z40L-P will be sold through its authorized partners and can be custom configured for businesses, schools, healthcare providers, government agencies, and public-sector organizations. Optional on-site warranty coverage will be available for as long as four years. It will be available starting this August.

At a starting price of $2,170, the Portégé Z40L-P is clearly not intended for ordinary consumers. Its value will depend on final configurations, sustained performance, battery life, and how well Intel Arc Pro B390 graphics handle certified professional applications. The replaceable battery and generous port selection, however, give this expensive Copilot Plus PC a few advantages that have nothing to do with AI.
