4MLinux 52 is now officially stable, bringing updated software, easier Wi-Fi configuration, and better support for older graphics cards. The lightweight Linux distribution also moves to the Linux 6.18 LTS kernel, which should help keep installations supported for years.
I absolutely adore lightweight Linux distributions because they can breathe new life into old computers that might otherwise end up in a closet or landfill. You see, not every machine needs a heavyweight desktop packed with background services, animations, and features most people will never touch.
4MLinux 52 includes LibreOffice 26.2.5 for office work, along with AbiWord 3.0.8, Gnumeric 1.12.61, and GIMP 3.2.4. Firefox 153 and Chrome 151 are available for browsing, while Thunderbird 153 handles email.
The multimedia selection includes Audacious 4.6.1, mpv 0.41.0, and VLC 3.0.23. Mesa 26.0.3 handles graphics and gaming, while BusyBox 1.37.0 can power a lightweight HTTP or FTP server.
Developers get PHP 8.5.4, Perl 5.42.1, Python 3.14.3, and Ruby 3.4.8. KornShell and the audioconvert command-line utility are included out of the box, so the distribution is useful for more than basic desktop tasks.
This release also adds Ultra HDR image support through libultrahdr and ImageMagick. The developers have simplified Wi-Fi configuration too, which should make getting online less annoying, particularly on older laptops being revived for another round of service.
Several optional extensions are available for download, including the classic platform game Rocks’n’Diamonds, the Elvis Vi clone, and PDF Tricks for working with PDF images through a graphical Ghostscript interface. The full selection can be found in the official 4MLinux 52 package list.
There is nothing especially flashy about 4MLinux 52, but that is part of its appeal. Instead of chasing every modern desktop trend, it offers current software in a compact package that could give an aging PC a useful second life.
