Plugable TBT-UDH2 dock packs 140W charging and dual HDMI 2.1

I have looked at quite a few Thunderbolt 5 docks lately, and many of them feel like clones of one another. Same layouts, same port selections, same reliance on adapters for basic HDMI setups. That is why Plugable’s new TBT-UDH2 immediately caught my attention. Instead of treating HDMI users like an afterthought, this dock puts dual HDMI 2.1 ports front and center.

The Plugable TBT-UDH2 is a 16-in-1 Thunderbolt 5 docking station with support for dual 8K displays at 60Hz or dual 4K displays at 144Hz. More importantly, those HDMI ports are built directly into the dock. No dongles. No weird adapter chains hanging off the back of your desk. For folks running modern TVs, gaming monitors, or creator displays, that is a pretty big deal.

Plugable says the dock can deliver up to 140W of laptop charging over a single Thunderbolt 5 cable while also handling massive bandwidth demands. Around front, users get a mix of USB-C, Thunderbolt 5, USB-A, SD and microSD card readers, and a headset jack. The back includes additional USB ports, 2.5Gb Ethernet, and the dual HDMI 2.1 outputs.

What makes this dock interesting to me is that Plugable clearly recognized a problem other companies ignored. A lot of premium docks still seem obsessed with DisplayPort configurations, despite HDMI continuing to dominate in homes and offices. “For years, high-performance docks have prioritized DisplayPort while HDMI users were left relying on adapters and compromises,” said Bernie Thompson, CTO of Plugable. “We built the TBT-UDH2 bristling with high-performance ports that show off Thunderbolt 5’s massive bandwidth, including more HDMI 2.1 and USB-C ports that are often lacking in other docks.”

The dock also works with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 systems, which should help it appeal to both Windows and Mac users. Plugable says the device supports modern Apple Silicon Macs too, including setups where some higher-end M5 Pro and Max systems can push an additional display through the downstream Thunderbolt 5 port.

I also appreciate the physical design here. The space gray aluminum enclosure looks clean without trying too hard to look futuristic, and the fanless operation means there is no annoying tiny fan whining away on your desk all day. Plugable designed the dock to stand vertically by default, helping it take up less desk space, but it can also be laid horizontally if that better fits your setup.

Pricing is always where these high-end docks get painful, however. The Plugable TBT-UDH2 normally sells for $349.95, which honestly feels about average for Thunderbolt 5 gear right now. Thankfully, Plugable is launching it at $279 for a limited time (with clickable coupon), and that price feels much easier to justify considering the feature set.

As someone who has spent way too much money on docks over the years, I can say there is nothing worse than buying an expensive “premium” dock only to realize you still need extra adapters just to connect your monitors. Plugable seems to understand that frustration better than some of its competitors.
