Slack transforms into an agentic OS as ChatGPT joins the workspace

Slack is no longer just a chat app. It is positioning itself as the “Agentic OS,” a unified hub where people, data, apps, and AI agents work together in real time. Announced at Dreamforce 2025, this evolution turns Slack into a central workspace where AI and humans collaborate side by side with full conversational context and access to company data. The goal is to make work faster, smarter, and far less fragmented.

At the center of Slack’s new vision is the idea that AI should work in context, not apart from people. Traditional productivity tools often force teams to jump between dashboards, forms, and chat windows just to complete a simple task. Slack’s solution is a conversational interface that connects Salesforce’s Agentforce platform directly into the flow of work. CRM data, analytics, and automation now live right where collaboration happens, inside Slack.

A major part of this transformation is the debut of new Agentforce experiences. Agentforce Sales, IT Service, HR Service, and Tableau are all built into Slack, making it possible for teams to manage pipelines, resolve tech issues, and view analytics using natural language. Employees can ask questions or take action without leaving Slack. IT support requests can now be handled instantly by AI agents, while more complex incidents automatically open dedicated channels that bring in the right people.

Slackbot has also been completely rebuilt. It is now a personalized AI companion that connects with Google Drive, OneDrive, and Salesforce to summarize meetings, generate project plans, and surface daily priorities. A new feature called Channel Expert provides immediate answers to FAQs based on historical company data, freeing up human experts for more strategic work.

Developers and AI partners are helping Slack become the central operating system for enterprise AI. New platform capabilities like the Real-Time Search API and Model Context Protocol server allow AI agents to retrieve live conversation data securely. Partners including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Perplexity, Dropbox, Notion, and Vercel are already building directly into Slack.

Slack ChatGPT

OpenAI even announced that ChatGPT now lives inside Slack. The company tweeted, “Big news: The ChatGPT app for Slack is here.” With Slack’s Real-Time Search API, the ChatGPT app now brings conversational AI to a dedicated sidebar, creating a space to brainstorm, draft, and problem-solve without ever leaving your workspace. It is available today through the Slack Marketplace.

Slack’s new agentic foundation positions it as the connective layer between humans and AI in the modern workplace. By grounding AI interactions in real conversations, Slack aims to make smart tools genuinely helpful. Every employee could soon have AI teammates that understand their goals and act in sync with their projects.

As Slack CEO Denise Dresser explained, “Every company is asking where their agents will live, how they’ll get context, and how to make them useful. Slack is the answer.” With Salesforce integration deepening and a growing lineup of AI partners, Slack is betting that the future of work won’t happen across tabs or dashboards. It will happen in conversation.
