Microsoft announces Xbox Ally handhelds but Nintendo Switch 2 still wins thanks to Mario Kart World and its legendary characters

Microsoft has officially jumped into the handheld gaming arena by teaming up with ASUS to launch two new devices: the ROG Xbox Ally and the high-end ROG Xbox Ally X. These Windows-based handhelds are stacked with modern specs and give players access to Xbox titles, Battle.net, and other major PC storefronts. But for all the hardware and software integration, they still lack the most important thing in gaming: timeless fun. And that’s something Nintendo continues to deliver in spades.

Yes, Microsoft is offering a lot here. The base Xbox Ally packs a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The Ally X kicks it up to a Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip, 24GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. Both come with 7-inch 1080p displays, 120Hz refresh rates, FreeSync support, and a tuned version of Windows 11 designed for portable gaming. There’s also a new Xbox full screen experience that brings all your games together, along with a redesigned Game Bar for quick access to chat, settings, and your library.

Physically, the devices look like mini Xbox consoles. The grips are shaped like Xbox controllers. The buttons feel familiar. ASUS Armoury Crate is included for more customization. And because it’s Windows, you’re free to run mods, stream from Twitch, or launch any app you want.

But here’s where the Xbox Ally lineup falls short. Despite all that power, it still doesn’t have Mario Kart World. And it doesn’t have Donkey Kong. Or Kirby. Or Luigi. Or Link. Or Samus. Or the kind of experiences you can only get from Nintendo’s deep and beloved library of characters. That’s why the Switch 2 wins, hands down.

Nintendo didn’t need to rework an entire desktop OS. It just delivered the next Mario Kart and reminded the world why people still love picking up a Nintendo handheld. It’s not about specs or refresh rates. It’s about instantly fun gameplay, rich characters, and experiences that stick with you.

Sure, the Xbox Ally X will beat the Switch 2 in performance tests. But specifications do not really matter — fun does. Look, people connect with games. And whether it’s racing with friends or exploring dreamy worlds with Kirby, Nintendo still understands what handheld gaming is really about.

Microsoft says pricing and pre-order details will arrive soon. Both models are coming this holiday season to regions including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, and more. But until Xbox can match the charm and cultural weight of Nintendo’s characters, it’s going to be an uphill climb in the handheld space.
