Casio is bringing G-SHOCK watches to Roblox, giving younger players a chance to wear virtual versions of the company’s popular timepieces while racing through a skateboarding obstacle course.
The new experience is part of the VIRTUAL G-SHOCK project and includes 12 avatar watch items based on two recognizable models, the DW-5600 and GA-2100. Each watch will be offered in six colors, allowing Roblox users to coordinate the digital accessories with their avatars.
I have always loved G-SHOCK watches. They look cool, they can take a beating, and they have a style that is easy to recognize from across the room. Bringing that design to Roblox makes sense, particularly when so many younger people now use virtual clothing and accessories as a form of self-expression.
Casio is also launching a Roblox world called “Challenge the Skate Obby: G-SHOCK.” It is a skateboarding obstacle race inspired by the durability tests used for actual G-SHOCK watches.
Players will race through a series of hazards and can repeat the course as they attempt to improve their performance. The format is based on the obstacle course games, commonly called obbies, that have become popular across Roblox.
The virtual watches will do more than sit on an avatar’s wrist. Wearing one inside the G-SHOCK experience will activate special effects, giving players an additional reason to buy and equip the items.
Casio says Roblox now has more than 150 million daily active users and is particularly popular among younger audiences. That makes it an obvious place for the company to introduce G-SHOCK to people who may not yet own a physical watch.
Traditional watches face an unusual challenge with younger consumers. A smartphone already shows the time, while an Apple Watch or another smartwatch offers notifications, fitness tracking, and apps. G-SHOCK has survived partly because people do not buy one only to know what time it is. The design, durability, and brand identity are a large part of the appeal.
A Roblox experience could help Casio build that connection before players are ready to spend money on a physical watch. Someone who equips a virtual GA-2100 today could eventually recognize the same model at a store or online.
Of course, this is also advertising aimed at a young audience. Casio is placing branded products inside a platform where virtual items, currencies, and purchases are a normal part of play. Parents may want to keep an eye on how much their children spend, even when the items are digital.
Still, this feels like a natural fit for G-SHOCK. The watches already have strong ties to skateboarding, streetwear, and youth culture, so the Roblox experience does not feel completely disconnected from the brand.
The 12 G-SHOCK watch items and the Challenge the Skate Obby experience launch on July 15. Casio will also hold a special launch event through August 2.
I am not sure a virtual watch can replace the satisfaction of wearing a real G-SHOCK, but it may convince a new generation that a watch can still be more than a clock strapped to your wrist. At the very least, the digital versions should look cool.
