Valve Steam Controller price and release date revealed

Alright folks, if you have been waiting to actually buy the new Steam Controller, you finally have the details that matter. Valve says it will go on sale May 4 here at 10AM Pacific, and it will cost $99.

That price puts it right up against other premium controllers. Valve is clearly not treating this like a throwaway accessory. It is positioning the Steam Controller as something you can rely on across your entire Steam library, whether you are on a desktop, laptop, or Steam Deck.

Everything else about the device lines up with what we have already seen. It leans heavily on Steam Input, which means you can remap controls however you want. That is especially important for games that were never designed for a controller in the first place.

On the hardware side, you are getting magnetic thumbsticks that should help with long term durability, plus gyro controls for more precise aiming. The trackpads are still here too, giving you a mouse-like option when needed. Some folks will love that, others might ignore them completely.

Battery life is rated at over 35 hours, and there is a magnetic puck that handles both charging and wireless connectivity. If that setup does not appeal to you, Bluetooth and USB are also supported, so you have options.

I will say this though. I am not totally convinced this needs to exist. It looks nice, and I respect the idea behind it, but we already have really solid controllers from Microsoft and Sony. An Xbox controller or a PlayStation controller works great with PC games, costs less in many cases, and does not require much tinkering. For a lot of folks, that simplicity is going to win.

The $99 price tag is going to be the deciding factor for many people. If you are into customizing every control and squeezing flexibility out of your setup, this might be worth it. If you just want to sit down and play, you may already own something that does the job just fine.

Either way, May 4 is when we find out how much demand there really is.
