Sometimes a nerd simply does not want a smartwatch. Sure, smartwatches can be convenient, but they also come with distractions, charging cables, notifications, and software updates. Every once in a while, it is refreshing to strap on a simple watch that just tells the time and looks cool doing it.
That is where the new Casio G-SHOCK GA-V01SKE series comes in. The company has unveiled four new models built around transparent resin cases that immediately evoke early 2000s gadget culture. The watches arrive in neon green, bright orange, deep purple, and smoky black, and each one has a playful, almost toy-like vibe that feels intentionally retro.
Design is clearly the star here. The GA-V01SKE watches feature oversized bumper-style hour markers, large side buttons, and a spherical glass face that gives the watch a chunky, sculptural appearance. Inside the translucent case is a layered analog-digital dial with metallic openwork accents and oversized hands designed to stand out against the colorful body.

Casio also introduced a clever bit of engineering inside the watch called the Shock Release Hand. Instead of being rigidly fixed like traditional watch hands, the minute hand is attached using a magnetic mechanism that allows it to briefly shift when the watch takes an impact. After absorbing the shock, the hand automatically snaps back into its correct position. It is a quirky idea, but it allows the company to use larger, more expressive hands without sacrificing durability.
Like other G-SHOCK models, the GA-V01SKE series still leans heavily on toughness. The watches feature a shock-resistant construction, 200-meter water resistance, and a 10-year battery. Casio also includes practical functions such as world time covering 48 cities, a 1/100-second stopwatch, countdown timer, five daily alarms, and a double LED light called Super Illuminator.
The watches also feature a hand shift function, which temporarily moves the hands out of the way when you need to read the digital display. It is a small feature, but one that longtime G-SHOCK fans will appreciate.
Personally, I find these watches charming. The transparent aesthetic feels nostalgic without trying too hard, and the colors are bold in a way that many modern gadgets simply are not. I especially love the clear and colorful designs, which look fun and unapologetically nerdy.
