Folks, Shake Shack wants to do more than sling burgers. The company just unveiled something called Project Catalyst, a wide-ranging technology push focused heavily on artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and data. The goal is to modernize its systems while it works toward a massive expansion plan of 1,500 company-operated restaurants.
Now, before we get too deep into the tech talk, I should admit something. I love Shake Shack burgers. I mean really love them. The ShackBurger is easily one of my favorites anywhere. But this announcement is not really about the burgers themselves. It is about the technology that helps run the restaurants behind the scenes.
Project Catalyst is essentially Shake Shack rebuilding its tech foundation while it grows. The plan includes new restaurant systems, improved point-of-sale technology, deeper data analytics, and the company’s first-ever loyalty platform. The idea is that all of this will make operations smoother while also keeping customers more engaged.
One piece of the project focuses on modernizing POS and kitchen display systems using technology from Qu, a cloud-based commerce platform built for restaurants. The updated setup is meant to improve order accuracy, speed up kitchen workflows, and help employees keep things moving when the lunch or dinner rush hits. The system also uses edge computing to keep things running quickly even during peak demand.
But the real story here is AI.
Shake Shack says it is building a new set of proprietary artificial intelligence tools designed to help restaurant operators make faster decisions. The systems will analyze data in real time and surface insights that managers can act on throughout the day.
Think alerts about performance, recommendations for operational tweaks, or warnings when something starts slipping. Instead of waiting until the end of the day to analyze reports, AI could flag issues while the restaurant is still running.
The company describes it as an intelligent operating layer for every Shack. That layer will generate insights, alerts, and suggestions that help operators run their restaurants more efficiently.
If this sounds familiar, that is because AI is quickly becoming the new management tool across a lot of industries. Restaurants in particular are experimenting with everything from AI drive-thru ordering to predictive analytics for staffing and inventory. Shake Shack is clearly leaning into that trend.
Another part of Project Catalyst is the brand’s first loyalty platform. This system will connect directly with POS and digital ordering tools so the company can better understand customer behavior. In theory, that means more personalized promotions and offers that encourage people to come back more often.
Underneath all of this sits a new data platform designed to bring together operational metrics, guest behavior, and analytics into one unified view. That foundation will feed Shake Shack’s expanding AI capabilities and help the company analyze what is happening across hundreds of restaurants at once.
In other words, the company is trying to turn data into real-time insight instead of something that only gets reviewed after the fact.
Of course, whenever companies start talking about AI roadmaps, I cannot help but wonder how much of it is truly new technology and how much is simply analytics with a fresh marketing label. We have seen plenty of AI hype across the tech industry lately.
Still, if better technology helps restaurants run more efficiently while keeping the food quality high, customers probably will not complain. Especially if it means those ShackBurgers keep coming out just as delicious as ever.
And if you have never had one, folks, I highly recommend trying a Shake Shack burger. AI or not, they are genuinely great.
