Canon’s PowerShot 30th anniversary limited edition G7 X Mark III looks fantastic

Canon is officially celebrating 30 years of its PowerShot compact digital camera line, which is a little surreal if you remember when these things first showed up in the mid 1990s. The original PowerShot 600 launched in July 1996, back when digital photography still felt like a science project. Fast forward to 2026, and Canon is marking the occasion with a limited edition PowerShot G7 X Mark III that leans heavily into nostalgia and collector appeal.

The anniversary model is scheduled to arrive in April 2026, and it is not pretending to be anything other than what it is. This is a familiar camera wrapped in a special design meant to honor a long running product line. Honestly, that feels like the right approach. PowerShot has never been about chasing specs for bragging rights. It has always been about convenience, approachability, and giving regular people a decent camera without the baggage of interchangeable lenses.

Over the past three decades, PowerShot has quietly become one of Canon’s most important brands. Canon says more than 200 PowerShot models have been released in the Americas alone as of February 2026, which sounds excessive until you think about how many niches the line tried to fill. Beginner cameras, pocketable Digital ELPH models, enthusiast friendly G Series compacts, and superzoom SX cameras all lived under the same umbrella.

Even today, Canon still frames PowerShot as a lifestyle lineup. The G Series focuses on image quality in a compact body, the V Series leans into video creation, and the SX Series caters to people who want huge zoom without hauling around a DSLR sized setup. Compact cameras may have faded from the spotlight, but Canon clearly does not see them as dead.

The anniversary camera itself is based on the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, which has built a solid following over the years, especially among vloggers and casual video creators. It uses a 1.0 inch stacked CMOS sensor with roughly 20.1 megapixels and pairs that with a bright 4.2x optical zoom lens. None of this is new, but it is still perfectly usable in 2026 for the audience this camera targets.

Video remains a big part of the pitch. The G7 X Mark III includes a Video Blog mode that simplifies shooting for people who just want to flip the screen up and start talking. That feature is a big reason the camera managed to stay relevant while smartphones continued to eat into the low end camera market.

Where this anniversary edition tries to stand out is design. Canon is using a graphite colored body that looks genuinely sharp, and the front control ring gets a diamond knurled texture that adds a more premium feel. I will say it straight up. The camera looks awesome. It is easily one of the best looking versions of the G7 X Mark III that Canon has released.

That said, the actual 30th anniversary logo on the body feels like a missed opportunity. It is there, and I suppose it is cool, but it is small and kind of unremarkable. For something meant to celebrate three decades of PowerShot, I expected a bit more visual confidence. Collectors will notice it. Everyone else might miss it entirely unless they are looking for it.

Canon is also bundling a few extras. The kit includes a limited edition Peak Design Cuff wrist strap and a 32GB SD card. These are nice touches, though they do not dramatically change the value equation. This still feels like a purchase driven by affection for the PowerShot name rather than pure practicality. To be honest, 32GB is a bit small for such an expensive and special camera package.

Looking back at PowerShot history makes the anniversary make sense. Models like the PowerShot G1, the S100 Digital ELPH, the rugged D10, and even oddballs like the PowerShot N all reflected different phases of digital photography. More recently, the PowerShot V10 showed Canon trying to reconnect with creators who want something better than a phone but simpler than a mirrorless setup.

The PowerShot G7 X Mark III Graphite Kit PowerShot 30th Anniversary Limited Edition is currently scheduled to go on sale in April 2026 with an estimated retail price of $1,299. That price firmly puts it in enthusiast territory, but for longtime PowerShot fans, the combination of nostalgia and a genuinely good looking design may be enough to justify it.
