Artificial intelligence is quietly becoming part of how people research their health, but enthusiasm is clearly tempered by skepticism. A new survey from Health Union shows that patients are increasingly turning to AI tools as a starting point for health questions, while remaining uneasy about accuracy, privacy, and what gets lost when technology replaces human interaction.
Health Union’s 2025 Connected Health Experiences and Perceptions of AI Survey polled more than 6,000 patients across 49 chronic conditions. The results suggest AI has slipped into everyday health research habits faster than many clinicians may realize, yet trust in those tools remains fragile.
Roughly one third of respondents said they have used an AI tool for some purpose, and 18 percent reported using AI specifically to look up health related information. That includes early research on symptoms, medications, and lab results. For most patients, AI is not the final authority. It is more like a quick orientation before moving on to other sources.
That trend becomes even clearer when looking at AI generated summaries. Sixty six percent of respondents said they have relied on AI summaries while researching health topics online. These summaries are often treated as a jumping off point, a way to get the basics fast when encountering something unfamiliar.
What stands out is how often that information goes unchecked. Fewer than half of patients who use AI summaries said they regularly review the underlying sources to confirm accuracy. That lack of verification introduces real risk, especially when the topic involves diagnosis, medication, or long term condition management.
Confidence in AI accuracy is notably low. Only 13 percent of patients agreed that AI written health summaries are usually accurate. Many respondents said they intentionally follow up by consulting non AI resources, signaling that trust in automated health information is still limited.
Privacy concerns loom just as large. Thirty five percent of respondents identified data privacy as their biggest concern when it comes to technology used for health management. The same percentage said they worry that AI tools may reuse or analyze personal information shared online. For patients already navigating sensitive health issues, that uncertainty can be enough to keep AI at arm’s length.
There is also a strong emotional dimension to the hesitation. Many patients said AI lacks the human understanding needed to account for complex medical histories or individual circumstances. The fear is not just about wrong answers, but about losing personalization and empathy in the process.
Age appears to influence comfort levels. Patients under 50 were more likely to use health apps, patient portals, and AI tools, while older respondents tended to be more cautious. That divide suggests AI adoption will continue to grow, but not uniformly across generations.
Taken together, the survey highlights a delicate balance facing healthcare technology. Patients appreciate the speed and convenience AI can offer, but they still want transparency, oversight, and reassurance that a human remains involved in their care.
Health Union frames the path forward as a hybrid approach, where AI supports research and self education without replacing clinicians or trusted medical guidance. The message from patients is not anti technology, but it is clearly pro accountability.
For now, AI appears to be carving out a role as a research assistant rather than a decision maker. Patients are willing to ask questions, skim summaries, and explore possibilities, but most are not ready to trust those tools on their own.
As AI becomes more embedded in health research, the real test will be whether developers and providers can address concerns around accuracy, privacy, and human connection. Without that trust, adoption may grow, but reliance will remain limited.
