GPT 5.1 brings a smarter and more customizable ChatGPT experience

OpenAI has started rolling out GPT 5.1 and it is already causing a stir among people who rely on ChatGPT every day. This release aims to make the model feel sharper while also becoming much easier to talk to. It is the kind of update that quietly changes expectations because the improvements are noticeable in ordinary conversations, not just in benchmark tests.

GPT 5.1 comes in two versions. Instant is the faster model that handles most chats. It now keeps a friendlier tone by default and feels more responsive to the actual phrasing of your requests. Thinking is the heavier model that digs into complicated problems. It now adjusts how long it thinks based on what you ask so simple questions get answered faster while harder ones receive more attention. This shift makes the overall experience feel more deliberate.

OpenAI also made a point of boosting instruction following. The company showed examples where GPT 5.1 sticks to strict formatting rules and short constraints with fewer mistakes. That type of improvement matters for anyone who uses ChatGPT for work and expects consistent behavior from one message to the next.

Sam Altman highlighted some of this on X when he said, “GPT 5.1 is out. It is a nice upgrade. I particularly like the improvements in instruction following and the adaptive thinking. The intelligence and style improvements are good too. Also, we have made it easier to customize ChatGPT. You can pick from presets like Default, Friendly, Efficient, Professional, Candid, or Quirky or tune it yourself.” His comment reflects what early users are already seeing in their own chats.

Aidan McLaughlin, a research scientist at OpenAI, said on X, “Welcome GPT 5.1 Instant. It is better than 4o in both EQ and IQ, the first chat model to use chain of thought, still as fast as GPT 5 Instant, and likely the safest chatbot in the world. I am super proud to have helped train this model with an incredible team.”

The customization options might be the most visible change. ChatGPT can now shift between multiple preset personalities if you do not want to micro manage tone. For people who want more control, you can now adjust traits like warmth, conciseness, and even how often emojis appear. Those changes apply instantly across all chats which makes the tool feel more consistent in day to day use.

There is also a noticeable effort to make the model more approachable when explaining technical topics. GPT 5.1 Thinking uses clearer wording and avoids vague terminology which helps when you are trying to understand something complicated. It is not perfect, but it is less likely to bury an explanation under extra fluff.

As someone who has watched the AI space closely, it is remarkable how quickly OpenAI keeps upgrading ChatGPT. The pace has reached a point where competitors must be paying close attention because the gap is becoming harder to close. These updates are not small and they land frequently enough that the industry has to keep adjusting.

The rollout is starting with paid users. Free users will see GPT 5.1 soon once OpenAI finishes the staged deployment. The API versions arrive later this week under gpt-5.1-chat-latest for Instant and GPT 5.1 for the Thinking model. Older GPT 5 versions will remain available for about three months to give people time to compare responses before they are retired.

This update signals a clear direction for OpenAI. The company wants ChatGPT to feel more personal and less mechanical while still improving its reasoning. GPT 5.1 inches closer to that goal. It is not a full generation jump, but the changes add up to a model that feels easier to trust for everyday tasks and long conversations.
