Yelp AI will call restaurants so you do not have to

Going out to dinner should be enjoyable. Calling a busy restaurant to find out whether you will spend an hour waiting for a table? Not so much. Yelp is introducing an AI feature that will make that call for you, and honestly, this sounds like something I would actually use.

Called Yelp Check for Me, it contacts a restaurant, asks about the current wait, and texts you the answer. It is part of the company’s 2026 Fall Product Release, which includes more than 30 features, updates, and integrations. There is plenty of AI in this announcement, but getting a useful answer before loading the family into the car is an easy benefit to understand.

You tap “Check wait time now,” provide your party size and phone number, and let the agent handle the conversation. Yelp says the text should arrive within minutes. As a father of a young child, I can appreciate knowing whether dinner is likely to involve a lengthy wait before we even leave home.

Of course, Check for Me does not reserve a table or add you to a waitlist. It gets an estimate, and a restaurant can get busier while you are driving there. Yelp plans to offer it on eligible restaurant business pages in the United States on iOS, with access through Yelp Assistant coming in the months ahead.

If you would rather book a table, Yelp Assistant is adding OpenTable integration on iOS. You can select a date, time, and party size through the assistant, while OpenTable handles the confirmation and any reservation changes. Users can also join Yelp Waitlist at participating restaurants from the chat and receive updates when their table is ready.

Another addition, Keep Me Posted, lets you schedule recommendations. You could ask for date-night ideas every Wednesday or a monthly list of dog-friendly hikes, with suggestions arriving through push and in-app notifications. Thankfully, you can change or turn off those reminders through settings or by asking the assistant.

Yelp is also bringing real-time weather into its recommendations. That could mean suggesting somewhere other than a patio-only restaurant when rain is coming or helping you choose a day for an outdoor activity. It is a sensible use of information that can actually change where you decide to go.

The assistant is getting more personal, too. Updates rolling out use previous conversations and review history to suggest follow-up questions, with searches, saved businesses, preferences, and other app activity set to inform future answers. Recent conversations are saved by topic, initially covering the past 30 days, with full history planned in the coming weeks.

For people who just want to keep track of places, My Lists lets you organize businesses into “Been Here” and “Want to Go” lists. You can rank them, add notes, filter your selections, and share them with friends. The tab is available on iOS and Android, with lists also viewable on desktop. Weekly recommendations based on visited places and rankings are scheduled to begin in November.

Business owners are getting their own AI agent called Smart Lead Reply. Starting in November, eligible service businesses will be able to pay $30 per month for a tool that responds to Request a Quote submissions, answers questions, gathers project details, and helps determine whether a potential job fits their services.

Owners can supply pricing, promotions, services, questions, and scheduling links. The conversations stay in their Yelp inbox, allowing them to review the exchange and take over. I can see the appeal for a plumber or electrician who cannot stop working to answer every inquiry, although a quick automated response is only helpful if it gives the customer accurate information.

Yelp is also adding appointment scheduling through ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro, plus integrations that send leads into Jobber and Workiz. Consumers can submit quote requests for up to five projects in one assistant conversation. Someone preparing a home for sale, for example, could contact several types of professionals without starting a separate chat for each job.

And yes, advertising is part of the update. Yelp Audiences can match ads shown elsewhere on the web to a person’s previous search intent on Yelp, while a Shopify Conversions app helps advertisers connect ad clicks and views with purchases. More personalized recommendations for users arrive alongside more targeted advertising for businesses.

Check for Me is still the feature that interests me most here. I would happily let an AI ask how long the wait is, provided it can finish the call without confusing or frustrating the employee who answers. A restaurant host already has enough to do during the dinner rush. Making life easier for the diner should not mean creating another headache for the person trying to seat them.
