Lexar goes wild with a 22-port Thunderbolt 5 dock featuring a 5-inch touchscreen

Lexar is best known for storage products such as SSDs and memory cards, but its Pexar smart device brand is getting ready to enter the docking station market in a big way. Its first dock, the PexarBolt Ultra, combines Thunderbolt 5, 22 ports, 10GbE networking, built-in NVMe storage support, and a 5-inch touchscreen.

Yes, a touchscreen on a dock. And surprisingly, folks, it doesn’t seem like a pointless gimmick. You see, the 5-inch dashboard can show what is connected, how much power devices are drawing, temperature information, transfer speeds, and data activity in real time.

Behind that screen is a ridiculous amount of connectivity. Pexar says the dock offers 80Gbps Thunderbolt 5 performance, with bandwidth reaching up to 120Gbps using Bandwidth Boost. It also claims support for dual 8K displays at 60Hz, although actual display capabilities will depend on the computer and graphics hardware being used.

The 22-port selection includes 10GbE Ethernet, a CFexpress Type B reader, SD and microSD card readers, and an M.2 NVMe SSD slot. Being able to install storage directly inside the dock could be especially useful for photographers, video editors, developers, and anyone tired of having yet another external SSD dangling from their computer.

PexarBolt Ultra can also provide up to 140W of laptop charging using USB PD 3.1. In theory, that means a single Thunderbolt cable can handle displays, networking, storage, peripherals, and power, which is exactly what a high-end dock should be doing.

Of course, cramming this much hardware into one box creates heat. Pexar has included smart active cooling designed to maintain performance under sustained workloads. Since the dock has a screen anyway, users can also monitor temperature information and thermal alerts directly from the dashboard.

Things get even more interesting for developers. Pexar says the touchscreen can display workflow information, including Claude Code workflow and session status. The company notes that it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic, but the integration gives the screen another potential purpose beyond monitoring hardware.

There is one rather large catch: the price. Pexar says PexarBolt Ultra will carry a $649 MSRP. Kickstarter funding opens September 8 with an early bird price of $479. Even the discounted price puts this firmly in premium territory. You can buy a lot of docking station for $479, never mind $649.

Pexar itself is a smart device brand from Lexar, rather than a replacement for the familiar Lexar name. The company is using the Pexar brand to expand beyond Lexar’s traditional storage business while drawing on its experience with storage and imaging technology.

At $649, this thing certainly isn’t for everyone. But Thunderbolt 5, 22 ports, 10GbE, an internal NVMe slot, 140W charging, and a touchscreen make the PexarBolt Ultra far more interesting than another anonymous slab covered in USB ports. For its first dock, Pexar certainly isn’t playing it safe.
