Gen Z wants AI to organize notes not write them

Artificial intelligence has become nearly impossible to avoid in education. Students can use it to summarize readings, generate study guides, explain difficult concepts, and, of course, complete work they were supposed to do themselves.

That last use tends to dominate the conversation. Whenever AI and education appear in the same headline, the story often revolves around cheating, plagiarism, or students outsourcing their thinking to a chatbot.

A new survey commissioned by Notability suggests the reality may be more nuanced. According to the popular note-taking company, 47 percent of U.S. students would prefer AI to help organize their notes rather than create those notes for them. Just 13 percent said they want AI to write their notes, while 21 percent described AI as a distraction from learning.

In other words, many students may want AI to clean up the mess, not take over the entire process.

“Most students don’t want AI to do the work. They want it to make their own work usable,” said Notability CEO Fred Mitchell. “Notability is built for exactly that.”

That quote is obviously convenient for a company selling a digital note-taking app, but the underlying idea makes sense. There is a meaningful difference between asking AI to produce work from nothing and using it to organize material that a student already created.

The survey found that half of the students polled expect to use AI as part of their note-taking this school year. Thirty-four percent said they already use it, while another 15 percent plan to start.

Among students who use AI, 64 percent said they rely on it to organize or summarize their own notes. Another 59 percent use it to create study materials based on those notes.

Those uses feel less like replacement and more like post-processing. A student still has to attend class, listen, decide what matters, and write something down. AI then helps turn those rough notes into a cleaner outline, flash cards, or a study guide.

That does not eliminate every concern. An AI-generated summary can omit important details, misunderstand context, or confidently reorganize information in a way that changes its meaning. Students still need to review the output rather than assume the software got everything right.

Still, using AI to make existing notes more manageable is a far more defensible use than asking it to generate an assignment from a prompt.

Handwriting also appears to retain a strong hold on students, despite the abundance of laptops, tablets, transcription apps, and AI assistants.

Seventy-eight percent of respondents said taking notes by hand helps them retain information better than typing. Eighty-one percent said they understand material better when they actively take notes instead of relying on recordings or transcripts.

That finding is important because convenience does not always lead to better learning. Recording an entire lecture may capture every word, but it does not necessarily force a student to process the material. Writing notes requires decisions. The student must identify key points, shorten ideas, and translate information into language that makes sense to them.

Notability pointed to research published in 2025 by Cambridge University Press & Assessment and Microsoft Research that also examined the role of note-making in learning and memory. The company argues that the combined findings support a model in which handwriting and AI work together rather than compete.

The survey also uncovered a much less dramatic problem that may be one of the better arguments for AI-powered note organization.

Sixty percent of students said they have avoided reviewing their notes because the notes were too messy or disorganized.

That is easy to believe. Notes taken during a fast lecture can become a collection of half-finished sentences, abbreviations, arrows, and thoughts that made sense for about five minutes. By the time an exam arrives, deciphering the notes can feel like another assignment.

This is where AI could provide real value. A tool that categorizes handwritten notes, identifies topics, improves search, and creates a usable study structure could reduce friction without removing the student from the learning process.

The survey found that 93 percent of respondents consider searchable and digitally organized notes important. Among students who changed their note-taking methods, 58 percent said they experienced better grades or improved retention.

Those figures should be treated carefully. The survey does not prove that changing note-taking methods directly caused higher grades. Students who invest time in improving their study habits may already be more engaged or motivated than those who do not.

There is also the source of the research to consider, folks. Notability commissioned the survey, and the results support the exact type of product it sells. The company has a clear business interest in presenting digital note-taking and AI organization as a healthy middle ground between traditional handwriting and full AI automation.

That does not make the findings meaningless, but it does mean this should not be treated as a neutral academic study or definitive proof of how an entire generation uses AI.

The survey included 503 U.S. students between the ages of 14 and 24 who were preparing to return to school. Forty-six percent were high school students, 37 percent attended four-year colleges, and 14 percent attended community colleges.

A sample of 503 people can offer an interesting snapshot, but it cannot represent every student, school, or learning environment. The survey also groups together teenagers and young adults who may have very different experiences with technology and education.

Even with those limitations, the findings challenge the idea that students only see AI as a shortcut.

Many appear to understand that there is value in doing the initial work themselves. They want to write, think, and participate, but they also want technology to help sort through the results.

That may ultimately be one of the more reasonable roles for AI in education. It can help students find information, organize their thoughts, and build study materials without pretending the learning process can be reduced to pressing a button.

The real test will be whether these tools continue to support active learning or gradually encourage students to hand over more of the work. For now, at least, Notability’s survey suggests many students still want to remain involved.
