SparkyLinux 2026.03 lands with Linux kernel 6.19 and a fresh Debian testing base

SparkyLinux fans have something new to play with today. You see, the project has released fresh ISO images (download here) for SparkyLinux 2026.03, codenamed “Tiamat,” continuing its semi-rolling approach built on top of Debian testing, currently known as Forky.

If you already run the rolling edition of SparkyLinux, this release probably will not feel dramatic. In fact, you do not need to reinstall anything at all. Just update your system as usual and you will get the same packages that appear in the new ISO images. Still, the refreshed installers and updated software stack make this release worth mentioning.

The default kernel included with SparkyLinux 2026.03 is Linux 6.19.6. If you like experimenting with different kernels, Sparky’s repositories also provide alternatives such as 7.0-rc3, 6.19.8, and the long-term support kernels 6.18.18-LTS and 6.12.77-LTS. That flexibility has always been part of Sparky’s charm. It lets users stay close to Debian while still giving them room to tweak things.

On the application side, the distro ships with Firefox 140.8.0 ESR and Thunderbird 140.8.0 ESR. Users who want something newer can grab Firefox 148.0.2 from Sparky’s repositories. Developers will also notice the presence of GCC15 along with GCC16-base, which keeps the toolchain fairly modern.

The installers received a couple of interesting changes too. The command-line installer, called “sparky-installer,” now includes an option to install the 32-bit ia32 version of GRUB UEFI on 64-bit machines. Meanwhile, the graphical Calamares installer has been updated to version 3.4.2 and now technically allows a single-character password during setup. Obviously that is not recommended, and the project suggests using something in the eight to twelve character range instead.

There are a couple of installation notes worth keeping in mind. Installing SparkyLinux on UEFI machines requires an active internet connection, and the developers recommend using the Calamares installer for those systems. If you are working with older hardware with a 64-bit processor running BIOS or UEFI, the CLI installer can still handle the job with the command “sudo sparky-installer.”

SparkyLinux 2026.03 for amd64 is available in several editions including LXQt, KDE Plasma, MATE, Xfce, MinimalGUI with Openbox, and a MinimalCLI text-only version. Also, for live sessions, the user password is “live,” and the root password is left blank.

All in all, this release is mostly about keeping SparkyLinux aligned with the latest packages coming from Debian testing while refining the installer and toolchain along the way. Nothing flashy here, but if you like a Debian-based system that stays fairly fresh without turning into chaos, SparkyLinux continues to be a solid option.
