IBM is back at it with the Masters Tournament, rolling out a new set of AI-powered features inside the official Masters app on iPhone and Android. This time, it is leaning heavily on its watsonx platform to turn decades of golf history and real-time data into something a bit more interactive right from your phone.
The most interesting addition is “Masters Vault Search,” which basically lets you dig through more than 50 years of tournament footage just by asking for what you want. No scrubbing through long videos, no guessing timestamps. The system uses things like speech recognition, scene detection, and metadata to pull up specific moments pretty quickly. If you are watching on your phone and want to jump straight to a classic shot, this could actually be useful.
IBM is also updating its “Hole Insights” feature, which tries to explain what is happening after every shot. Once a ball lands, the app looks at where it ended up, compares it to past data, and gives probabilities for outcomes like birdie or par. It is the kind of thing that could help newer fans understand the game better, especially when you are following along live on mobile.

That is really the big question here. Is this stuff actually improving the experience, or just adding more layers on top of a sport that has always been pretty straightforward? Some people will love having all that data in their pocket. Others will probably ignore it and just watch the golf.
IBM and the Masters have been working together for a long time, so none of this is exactly surprising. These new features join things like AI-generated highlights and quick recaps, all built into the Masters app to keep people engaged whether they are on iPhone or Android.
The 90th Masters Tournament runs from April 9 through April 12 at Augusta National. The golf will still be the main attraction. The AI just happens to be along for the ride.
