Firefox commits to keeping Windows 10 users safe after Microsoft pulls the plug

Microsoft just released the final free update for Windows 10, officially ending its regular support for the operating system. But Firefox users still running Windows 10 can breathe a sigh of relief. Mozilla says it will continue to fully support the browser on Windows 10 for the foreseeable future, including performance and security updates, not just basic patches.

That means users who stick with Windows 10 will not be abandoned the way Windows 7 and 8 users were, who now only receive limited security updates. Mozilla reaffirmed its rapid response to vulnerabilities, often patching critical issues within 24 hours. Windows 10 remains one of Firefox’s most popular platforms, and Mozilla is not ready to walk away from it.

Of course, Mozilla still recommends upgrading to Windows 11 if possible. While Firefox will remain updated, Microsoft itself will not keep improving Windows 10, which could eventually create security gaps. Users whose PCs support Windows 11 can upgrade for free, and Firefox will remain installed with all bookmarks, passwords, and data intact.

If your hardware cannot run Windows 11, Microsoft now offers “extended security updates” for Windows 10. Those will not include new features but will patch known vulnerabilities. Interestingly, Microsoft says that enrolling through “Windows Backup” makes these updates free, although the full details are still rolling out.

Mozilla also warns that users who move to a new Windows 11 PC may lose their Firefox data unless they use Firefox Sync. Sync encrypts everything end-to-end, meaning not even Mozilla can see your bookmarks or passwords. It is a simple safety net for anyone migrating to a new computer or preparing for the day when Windows 10 finally becomes obsolete.

For now, Firefox users on Windows 10 can keep browsing confidently, knowing that at least one major developer has not abandoned them just yet.
