Google Translate gets AI live conversations and language practice tools

Google is adding a fresh layer of AI to its Translate app, making it more than just a quick way to look up words. With today’s update, the app is becoming both a live interpreter and a personal language tutor.

The first feature focuses on real-time conversations. Travelers can now hold natural back-and-forth exchanges with spoken and on-screen translations in more than 70 languages, including Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, and Korean. Just tap “Live translate,” choose the languages, and start talking.

AI helps the app recognize pauses, accents, and intonations, so the back-and-forth feels smooth. Google says this works even in noisy places such as airports or crowded cafés thanks to advanced speech models that isolate voices from background noise. The live feature is available today in the U.S., India, and Mexico.

The second feature is aimed at language learning. A new “practice” mode creates custom listening and speaking sessions tailored to your skill level and goals. Beginners might listen to simple conversations and tap the words they recognize, while advanced users can practice speaking with hints and corrections.

Translate tracks progress over time, helping learners build confidence. The pilot is rolling out first for English speakers practicing Spanish or French, and for Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers practicing English.

Both features are powered by Google’s Gemini models, which improve translation quality, reasoning, and text-to-speech. Google says the goal is no longer just word-for-word translation, but helping people connect, learn, and travel with confidence.
