Rivian vehicles get Google-powered navigation upgrade

Rivian electric vehicle dashboard showing Google Maps integration

Rivian drivers are about to get a smarter ride, thanks to a new collaboration with Google. Starting today, Rivian is rolling out a redesigned in-car navigation system built with Google Maps technology. However, rather than having Google control the experience, it will instead still be wrapped in the automaker’s signature interface.

Yes, folks, rather than just slapping standard Google Maps into its dashboard, Rivian is using the Google Maps Auto SDK. That’s a toolkit that lets automakers craft their own custom navigation experiences using Google’s underlying data and routing smarts. In Rivian’s case, it means drivers can access familiar features like real-time traffic, satellite views, and points of interest while still enjoying EV-specific perks Rivian has built on top.

The updated Rivian Navigation system keeps key features Rivian owners rely on, such as route planning that includes charging stations, estimated charging times, and the company’s “Charging Scores” which help drivers find fast, reliable chargers. It’s Google Maps under the hood, but with Rivian’s EV focus baked in.

This integration could be a big win for Rivian’s user experience, which has always aimed to be sleek and intuitive. And for Google, it shows how Maps is evolving beyond phones and Android Auto, quietly becoming the brains behind custom navigation platforms in the automotive world.

Google says it’s also working with other carmakers to develop personalized experiences using its Auto SDK. So while Rivian is first out of the gate with a Maps-powered redesign, it likely won’t be the last.

This update is rolling out to all Rivian vehicles starting today.
