Calibre 8.7 adds support for 2024 Kindles and fixes Kobo issues

A fresh version of Calibre is out today, and if you manage your own ebook library, this update is worth grabbing. Version 8.7 brings improvements for both new and old devices, including support for Amazon’s latest Kindles and a fix for older Kobo readers.

If you own a Kindle released in 2024 or later, Calibre now creates proper page number files (APNX) when sending books. This small detail makes a big difference in how your Kindle displays page numbers for sideloaded content. It’s one of those quiet quality-of-life upgrades that longtime users will appreciate.

Calibre 8.7 also fixes a regression from the last release that broke the configuration process for sending books to devices. That issue has been resolved, so things should be back to normal when transferring titles to your reader.

Kobo owners with very old models (the kind that predate the Kobo Touch) can once again use Calibre reliably. Those devices stopped working with the software recently, but this update restores compatibility.

On the technical side, there’s a workaround included for systems where LibMTP fails to return device serial numbers. That issue affected some Linux setups in particular, so users on open-source platforms should notice smoother behavior.

The built-in book editor also received some attention. The next and previous buttons in the search tool are working again. And when downloading metadata one book at a time, rules for mapping series and publisher fields now handle commas properly.

Custom comment fields in the metadata editor have been tweaked too. When there are only a few, they’ll now expand vertically to fill unused space, making it easier to view and edit information without feeling cramped.

Calibre’s built-in news delivery system also got a few updates. Enhanced sources now include New York Magazine, World Archaeology, Minerva Magazine, Military History, and Ancient Egypt.

Calibre continues to stand out as a free and powerful tool for managing ebooks. It supports Linux, Windows, and macOS equally well. And unlike many modern apps, it’s still fully offline and totally under your control.
