Samsung says its new UFS 5.0 storage will make AI phones faster

When smartphone companies talk about performance, the spotlight usually falls on processors. That’s understandable. Chips are easy to market. But storage matters too, especially now that every tech company seems determined to cram AI into every device it sells.

Samsung today unveiled UFS 5.0, a new storage solution that the company says is the fastest in the industry. The technology is designed with on-device AI in mind, and Samsung believes it will help future smartphones, wearables, and XR headsets handle increasingly demanding AI workloads without constantly leaning on the cloud.

According to Samsung, UFS 5.0 can deliver sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and write speeds of up to 9.5GB/s. Those are eye-popping numbers for mobile storage, and more than double what Samsung says was possible with its previous UFS 4.1 technology.

While benchmark figures don’t always translate into dramatic real-world improvements, faster storage could become increasingly important as AI models continue moving onto devices. Loading large language models, processing data locally, and retrieving information quickly all depend on storage performance. A faster processor can only do so much if it’s waiting on slower storage.

Samsung is also promising better efficiency. The company says UFS 5.0 improves power efficiency by more than 40 percent compared to its UFS 4.1 solution. If that claim holds up in shipping products, it could help offset some of the extra battery drain that comes with running AI features locally.

Another interesting detail is the physical size. Samsung says the new package measures just 7.5mm x 13mm x 0.9mm, making it 16.7 percent smaller than its predecessor. Device makers are always fighting for every millimeter of internal space, so a smaller storage package could leave more room for larger batteries or additional components.

Of course, consumers won’t be shopping for UFS chips the way they shop for processors or cameras. Most people will never know what storage standard is inside their phone. What they will notice is whether apps open instantly, files transfer quickly, and AI features respond without lag.

That’s where Samsung’s latest announcement could end up mattering. For all the hype surrounding mobile AI, users still expect their devices to feel fast. If UFS 5.0 helps make that happen, it may end up being one of the more important smartphone upgrades that most people never think about.

Samsung says mass production of UFS 5.0 will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, with capacities reaching up to 1TB.
