I actually really love this idea from AT&T. The company has launched “Unlimited Day Pass,” which lets eligible iPad users buy 24 hours of unlimited cellular data for just $3. Best of all, you do not even need to be an AT&T customer to use it. Folks using Verizon or T-Mobile can activate it too, as long as the iPad supports eSIM.
Here is the thing. I personally do not need cellular connectivity on my iPad every single day. Most of the time, Wi-Fi is perfectly fine for me. But having the option to quickly buy data when traveling, working remotely, sitting in a waiting room, or dealing with unreliable public Wi-Fi? That sounds incredibly useful.
And to tell you the truth, a paltry $3 for 24 hours of unlimited data feels like a great deal. There are no contracts, subscriptions, or credit checks involved either. Users can activate it directly from the iPad’s cellular settings using a debit or credit card. AT&T is even giving the first day away for free to new users.
Now, if you plan on using your iPad on cellular every day, there are definitely better long-term deals out there. A traditional monthly tablet line will almost certainly cost less over time. But that is not really the point of this product. This is clearly designed for occasional use, and for that purpose, I think AT&T nailed it.
The service currently works with a wide range of eSIM-capable cellular iPads, including newer iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and standard iPad models. AT&T also says it plans to expand the concept to more 5G-enabled devices in the future, including Android tablets, smartwatches, laptops, and even drones.
Frankly, I would not be surprised if rival carriers quickly copy this idea. It is simple, flexible, and actually solves a real problem for people who only need mobile connectivity once in a while.
