Mario is going airborne once again, but this time not in a video game. Nintendo of America has announced that everyone’s favorite plumber will soar through the streets of Manhattan during the 99th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The new balloon marks the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., which debuted in Japan back in 1985. Mario is older than that particular game, but I digress.
The massive Mario balloon, built by the Macy’s Parade Studio in collaboration with Nintendo, stretches 51 feet long, 37 feet wide, and 43 feet tall. Dressed in his familiar blue overalls and red cap, Mario will appear in a dynamic flying pose inspired by Super Mario Galaxy. It’s a fitting tribute for one of gaming’s most recognizable icons and a reminder that Mario’s legacy extends far beyond consoles and cartridges.
Nintendo executive Devon Pritchard said the collaboration celebrates “40 years of bringing smiles to faces all over the world,” while Macy’s parade producer Jordan Dabby called Mario’s appearance “a joyful celebration” sure to get fans cheering “Wahoo!” as he glides by.
The timing couldn’t be better. Mario’s world continues expanding with Super Mario Bros. Wonder on the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie hitting theaters April 3, 2026. His latest appearance in the sky adds yet another layer to his global presence, which now includes games, theme parks, and blockbuster films.
While I typically watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade out of tradition, I’ll admit it’s actually quite insufferable. The event has become less about balloons and more about endless Broadway show performances and awkward lip-syncing. Still, it’s hard to resist tuning in just to see icons like Mario float above the streets of New York.
Fans visiting the city this holiday season can keep the celebration going at the Nintendo NEW YORK store in Rockefeller Plaza. The store will feature special decorations and holiday-themed events, perfect for anyone looking to grab gifts or snap a selfie with Mario merch before catching the parade live.
The 99th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade airs Thursday, November 27, on NBC and streams on Peacock from 8:30 a.m. to noon in all U.S. time zones.
