Bitdefender to acquire Mesh Security as email threats surge worldwide

Bitdefender is beefing up its email defenses. The cybersecurity company has announced its intention to acquire Mesh Security, an Ireland-based email security startup that’s been quietly helping MSPs and businesses block phishing, ransomware, and business email compromise attacks.

The acquisition is expected to boost Bitdefender’s managed detection and response (MDR) offerings and extend the capabilities of its GravityZone XDR platform. The move also strengthens its grip on the email threat landscape, still one of the most exploited attack vectors today.

According to the FBI’s 2024 Internet Crime Report, business email compromise scams alone led to nearly $2.8 billion in losses last year. It’s no surprise then that Bitdefender sees value in acquiring a company that’s built around securing inboxes.

Mesh, founded in 2020, has built an email security solution that layers perimeter-based protection with mailbox-level defense using API integration. That dual approach feeds telemetry into Bitdefender’s global threat intelligence network, improving detection and response.

While Bitdefender already has deep roots in the cybersecurity world, this acquisition adds a feature set tailor-made for MSPs. Mesh’s centralized management system is optimized for multi-tenant use, allowing service providers to deliver scalable protection with less overhead. Real-time insights, automated policy enforcement, and tight integration into existing systems are all part of the pitch.

Bitdefender president Andrei Florescu framed the deal as a natural evolution of its enterprise offerings, stating, “Mesh brings leading-edge innovation from a deeply experienced team that shares our commitment to effective, real-world security.”

Mesh co-founder and CEO Brian Byrne echoed that sentiment, saying, “We’ve always focused on building practical, powerful email security that just works — and Bitdefender shares that same mindset.”

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition is still subject to regulatory approvals, but once finalized, Mesh will be folded into Bitdefender’s growing security empire.
