AMD and OpenAI are joining forces in a deal that could reshape the AI hardware landscape. The two companies announced a multi-year, multi-generation agreement that will see OpenAI deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs to fuel its future AI infrastructure.
The first wave of deployment will begin in the second half of 2026, with OpenAI rolling out 1 gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs. From there, the rollout will expand as OpenAI scales its compute capacity. This builds on earlier collaborations around the MI300X and MI350X GPUs.
As part of the arrangement, AMD issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock. The first tranche vests with the 1 gigawatt deployment, with additional tranches tied to milestones such as scaling up to 6 gigawatts, AMD share price targets, and OpenAI’s technical and commercial achievements.

Jean Hu, AMD’s CFO, pointed out, “Our partnership with OpenAI is expected to deliver tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD while accelerating OpenAI’s AI infrastructure buildout. This agreement creates strategic alignment and shareholder value for both AMD and OpenAI.”
If the deal plays out as planned, OpenAI gets the horsepower to push AI forward while AMD cements its position as a central supplier powering the most ambitious AI infrastructure build yet.
